Guo Pei – couture de force

I recently visited the NGV Triennial to get some images of the art on display and couturier Guo Pei’s fascinating 2017 spring-summer Legend Collection was of particular interest. The low light ambience for her ornate costumes captured the mood of her designs although it  presented a few photography (without flash) challenges and the needed shutter speed of  1/4 sec tested my camera steadiness. The lavish gold costumes placed on black mannequins gave the impression of a ‘Black Madonna’, especially with the ‘Gold Memory’ gown.

Early in 2016, Guo Pei was preparing for her next collection and visited a small antique shop in a Paris flea market. In a box containing glass beads, old buttons and strips of lace, she found several spools of gold embroidery floss produced a few decades ago. The shop owner informed her that the floss was once a favourite material of couture designers. Without hesitation, Guo bought all the gold thread in the shop, and used it in the embroidery work for her Legend Collection. As she believes gold is the colour of the soul, it was an appropriate choice for the theme of her collection.

‘Golden goddess’  — Guo Pei

(metallic fabric, silk, embroidery, crystals)

‘Legends have always been one of my greatest sources of inspiration’, claimed Guo Pei. ‘The origins of mankind, creation myths and the mysteries of eternal life fascinate me. A part of my soul will always hold onto the most beautiful fantasies inspired by legends.’ Guo Pei’s fantastical designs in her Legends Collection are steeped in classical imagery, reinforced by the use of rich brocades, opulent silks, delicate embroidery, spun gold and bead and crystal details, all hand sown with total dedication to the handcraft traditions of couture. Contemporary elements are also merged into her imaginative designs, resulting in a fusion of oriental culture, classical fantasy and modern avant garde, combined with an inspiring mix of textures and colour. The dazzling array of her beguiling costumes, created by Guo Pei and her skillful team of artisans, convey a grandeur worthy of royal or religious ceremonial dress. Romance, mystique, devotional reverence, Renaissance art, Gothic fairy tales, medieval warriors and heavenly goddesses are all channeled into her Legends collection on display at e the NGV Triennial. The Legend collection reveals an enchanting display of  Guo Pei’s reflections on the spirit of devotion, her appreciation of handicrafts, and her perception of divine power.

The baroque cathedral of St. Gallen in Switzerland was an inspiration for the Legends collection. She was captivated by the impressive ethereal murals, its dome and the rich gold ornaments. Guo Pei spent 18 months working with haute couture fabric manufacturer Jakob Schlaepfer to design the bespoke fabric for this collection. These fabrics pay tribute to the cathedral’s beautiful painted interiors.

Sara Flynn pottery – Loewe Miami

Location, lighting, composition, camera angles, exhibition concepts and use of props  are some of the factors that can determine the successful creation of a marketing image for artwork display. Jonathan Anderson, the Artistic Director for the Spanish fashion house Loewe, used a bold curation concept for the ‘Chance Encounters’ series by importing an 18th Century grainary from Portugal to the Loewe store in the Miami Design District .The weathered, unadorned monolithic structure is featured in its stone plus wooden roof frame entirety.  Naturally the degraded and rugged surfaces provided an excellent contrast for the contemporary pottery, art and fashion on show. Featured ceramic artists for Chance Encounters have included Lucie Rie (2015), John Ward (2016) and Sara Flynn in 2017.
Images below highlight the grandeur of this ambitious display. I have also highlighted other ceramic pieces and some sculptures for their good photography and original presentation concepts.

Claudi Casanovas Quart Minvant

Catalan artist Claudi Casanovas’ had a  solo exhibition Quart Minvant (Waning Crescent) in 2017 at the  Fitzrovia Chapel curated by Erskine, Hall and Coe which featured large stoneware sculptures with biomorphic shapes. The pieces, which contain the form of an arch, refer to a metaphorical journey, a moment in balance, which ultimately alludes to life: life in its final evanescence and its promise of completeness.

Paola Paronetto – creazioni ceramiche

Paola Paronetto aspires to a certain degree of fragility in her sculptures by making them look more like cardboard constructions then ceramic. The principal material is clay, with the a variable percentage of other materials like pulp, paper, cardboard, glazes, vitrified engobes, gold, and platinum in the third fire.  I felt that the presentation, apart from the excellent lighting, also gained from the contrast of muted palettes against a grungy, monochrome background.

Barbara Hepworth felt passionately about the role of the artist within society and was instrumental in the promotion of the modernist spirit. Most of her public sculptures were an inspiration for great photography.

Wood and fungus – Land and Identity  —  Sally Cleary

Sally Cleary likes to create mixed media landscapes that combine hand made organic forms with natural and man-made found objects transposed through mixed-media sculpture, art installations and photography. These range from large scale installations or more compact 3D collages . Her hybrid creations attempt to re-examine and reinterpret the genre of still life in the 21st century with particular emphasis on the mechanisms and mixed art categories reflecting changes in our natural environment. Symbolic objects are introduced as metaphors for the fragility and vulnerability of our natural ecological balance. Since 2016 she has also been developing a new range of porcelain ceramics, focusing on organic vessel forms that can be utilised for vases, lighting and tableware.
Sally always new she would pursue art as a career and began with a Diploma in Visual Arts followed by an MA and a PhD in Fine Art. She worked for 2 years at the National Gallery of Australia aand 15 years as a teacher in ceramics and sculpture at the RMIT University . She is currently living in Paris where she gives workshops in the porcelain arts and also shares a large studio on the outskirts of Paris with a group of artists.

Mid Century aesthetic – atomic, minimal, kitsch, space-age

Design convergence in the Mid Century

Mid Century design from the post WW2 era possessed a bold and audacious aesthetic that grew from the fusion of many intrepid design concepts. It represented the critical mass of the merging of numerous design influences including biomorphic curves, orbiting atoms, fractured cubist forms, brutalist abstractions, lava glazes and streamlined minimalist forms.

The desire to bring futuristic styles into the mainstream, reflecting the thrust of the space age and the atomic age inventions, came into fruition. These provided iconic imagery that was very adaptable to the minimal streamlined industrial designs that had emerged in architecture and furniture from gifted designers like Le Corbusier, Ray Eames, Gio Ponti,  Isamu Noguchi and Walter Gropius. The public were eager to embrace modern design concepts, possibly to distance themselves from the recent WW global conflicts and their escapist desires were adequately provided by decor objects that exuded fantasy, glamour, modernism, humour and the future.

Designs embracing a fun-factor, kitchiness and sense of the future were ubiquitous and covered a vast array of decorative objects that included figurines, lamps, planters, clocks and vases.  Polynesian, Aztec, Tiki and African themes were popular, along with other kitsch diversions all combining with modernist, abstract features.

The inventive styles ranging from the quirky to the sophisticated, have proved to have a timeless appeal and can still be harmonious with contemporary modern decor designs. Due to their excellent craftsmanship that embraced new materials,, tasteful simplicity and adventurous innovation, they are still being admired and collected over half a century later. Their brilliant originality has endured the journey and contributed to their ongoing collectability and appeal.

Arteunok--Spain-wall-art

Arteunok — Spain

The arcane graffiti arts, involving late night freehand spray can forays on to vacant urban walls, is a thing of the past these days, due to it gaining acceptance and the creative evolution of many of its artists in this independent art culture.. The spirit of spontaneity still survives but the presentation has more finesse and scale and the mixing of techniques such as collage, graffiti, stencil, painting and drawing have been introduced. The merging of photo realism, abstraction and street art savvy have resulted in striking visuals rich in emotion and reach.

As the street art juggernaut rolls on, conferring it to be one of the fastest growing art movements at the beginning of the 21st century, both male and female street artists have been expanding the street aesthetic and pushing the pigments to drive new expressions of femininity with their urban murals to attain higher levels of recognition and visibility for women.

The involvement of female artists is growing and more have entered the street art fray. Several are featured here including the Cape Town street artist Faith 47, who has a focus on themes of equality, poverty and justice using a central figure of a women, quite often portrayed as an angel, lady liberty or an African mother with a child on her back, to communicate the message of a woman’s place in the world. Other female artists include the prolific French urban artist Vinnie, Amanda Lynne, Alice Pasquini, Diana Contreras, Toofly and Lady Aiko, who has been developing her Pop influenced street art using collages of mixed media landscapes since she moved to New York from Tokyo in the 90’s. She juxtaposes raw feminine imagery with touches of vivid butterflies and large flowers.

The male street visual artists also exploring female imagery include the UK artist’s Russ Mills of Byroglyphics, Mr Cenz with his colored futuristic female creations, David Walker’s color-explosive portrait abstractions and the Irish urban aesthetic painter FinDac. There’s also Hush with his mystique filled graffiti geishas, French artists Alexandre Monteiro aka Hopare and Loui Jouvier, the US based Ecuadorian artist Lenny Correa, Australian’s Anthony Lister and Reka One and Spanish based artist duo Pichi & Avo, recognized for their deft ability to ignite relationships between art, sculpture, architecture, space and social context.

“I love the idea of creating art for “the people” and sharing my vision with them. It’s so much fun! And it is also a great way for me to showcase my art. I want folks who see my art to feel positive about themselves. If there is a central message, it is: Enjoy your life! And I also want girls to know that they have the power to follow their dreams and create themselves.”    ... streetartNY
