Shozo Michikawa –– Kohiki Sculptural Form, 2017
Height 49cm–stoneware
Shozo Michikawa was born in Hokkaido in 1953. His ceramic sculptures at times reflect the untamed and rugged beauty of the landscapes of the Japan’s most northern island, Hokkaido. He studied at the Aoyama Gakuin University where he graduated in 1975. During his initial studies in the economic field, he attended evening classes in art, deciding a few years later to devote himself entirely to ceramics. He currently lives and works in Seto, in the prefecture of Aichi. He has exhibited mainly in Japan and also in the USA, Philippines, Mongolia, France, Netherlands, New York and London. In 2005 he was the first Japanese artist to have the honour of a personal exhibition in the Forbidden City in Beijing.
Shozo Michikawa likes to use a lathe as a creative tool to manipulate his sculptures with the alteration of form, cutting and faceting of the clay, making composite structures and other decorations.
Shozo Miciwawa currently has an exhibition at Erskine, Hall and Coe gallery in London. This will feature a range of Michikawa’s works spanning the last 15 years. These works are divided into three distinct areas: kohiki glaze, natural ash and tanka (black, charcoal firing). This will be running through to the 14th of February, 2019
Shozo Michikawa has also been shortlisted for this year’s LOEWE Craft Prize. The LOEWE Craft Prize 2019 exhibition will take place at Sogetsu Kaikan in Tokyo, Japan, from 26 June to 22 July.
