Andrew Rogers – Rhythms Of Life – sculptural land art project

To Life Israel geoglyph-Andrew Rogers

‘To Life’ (chai)  land art – Andrew Rogers

Arava Desert, Israel

The concept of Rhythms Of Life has evolved to become a global phenomenon, with many countries embracing the idea of a universal, life affirming symbol, expressed as a monumental land art sculpture. Andrew Rogers decision to extend the original sculptural form of his ‘Rhythms of Life’ sculpture onto a global scale was a visionary and bold undertaking. His innate ability to adapt a broad scope of materials into graceful and enticing sculptures, with an appealing sense of balance, has bestowed him the ability to tackle the enormous challenges required by this huge project.

When I first saw Andrew Rogers ‘Rhythms of Life’ sculpture at the Victorian Art Centre, I was impressed with its vibrancy and expansiveness and in retrospect I can now see how it has fed the impetus for future geoglyphs. This project has now expanded, since 1999, to become the largest collective land art project in the world, where Andrew Rogers has traversed the globe, liaising with different countries, to create modern geoglyphs that resonate with the local landscapes, cultures and indigenous stones and rocks. Local customs and peoples have also been integrated into the process of constructing these land art creations.

Created with local granite

Most of the ancient traditions harbor a deep empathy with their lands along with sacred beliefs locked into the local terrains. A great deal of respect and sensitivity was required in the negotiations to introduce a contemporary land art sculpture into these diverse locations. In addition to installing recurring geoglyphs of the ‘Rhythms of Life symbol’, to reinforce the concept of a global universality, his team have worked with local elders, museums and other lore-keepers to design a symbol relevant to their area as a companion land art. To date, the project has involved over 7,500 people, in 16 countries across seven continents with the first one being constructed in the Arava Desert in Israel.
For Andrew, the Rhythms of Life sculpture encapsulates the continual evolution and restless dynamic of creation and the circular nature of the patterns of birth life and death and I would love to see more additions to this vast endeavour in the future.

Born in Belarus in 1893, Max Penson moved to Tashkent, Uzbekistan in the 1920’s. He was initially employed as an an art teacher in Kokand but moved to photography after acquiring his first camera in the early 20’s. He eventually became a photojournalist noted for his photographs of Uzbekistan, where he visually documented the economic and cultural transformation of Uzbekistan from a highly traditional feudal society, into a modern Soviet republic between 1920 and 1940.
His remarkable images include the establishment of collective farms, irrigation of arid lands, development of the paper industry and silk production, introduction of cotton growing, liberation of women and their entry into the workforce, and the education of children. Penson recorded these historical changes and contributed regularly to the Soviet TASS agency. He also worked for Central Asia’s largest newspaper, Pravda Vostoka, in Tashkent.
Uzbekistan declared its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991

An eclectic collection of murals consisting of bas relief, high relief, frescoes, friezes and mosaics including classic frescoes from ancient Crete and Egypt and stone reliefs from Mesopotamia. A large body of Art Deco wall reliefs and Mid Century murals are also on display with a selection of new contemporary pieces.
Fernand Legers’s ‘Femmes au Perroquet’ (Woman with a Parrot), which he painted nearly 70 years ago, looks stunning in a bronze relief of fluid perspective and completely at home in a new contemporary architectural setting. Likewise William George Mitchell’s ‘Flock of rams’ bas relief facade, created with bronze- faced glass fibre, is bursting with detail and is a fine example of the eternally intriguing Mid Century brutalist architecture and art. He was the first artist to create integral pieces of concrete art, which were poured into molds at the site  and despite receiving much criticism from the art establishment at the time, he endured with creating his bold abstract public sculpture innovations which has gone on to create continued interest to otherwise drab walls of concrete. (wharfrej),
An excellent 1946 cubist sculpture panel by Le Corbusier is shown along with a lavish bronze African panel from Bruce Onobrakpeya.

Aesthetic of whimsy and the  pleasingly distasteful

In perplexing times, the tendency to gravitate towards sources of fun and frivolity increase exponentially, which might explain the proliferation of kitchy, novelty products and amusing objects of whimsy at the moment. Vulgarity and the cheesy and tacky in life and art has existed forever and has been a regular source of humor and entertainment. The not too subtle Kitsch pieces or whimsical wares with a quirky twist, that solicit a smile or chuckle, without demanding too much mental input, have a timeless appeal. The connoisseurs of the lowbrow and the pleasingly distasteful love to admire these intentionally edgy creations or conversely, totally unintentional kitsch classics, for their creativity or lack thereof. Kitsch is synonymous with all that is spurious in these modern times, while being palatable for its simple charm.  Provocative, crude, disarming, idiosyncratic, brilliant and cute are some of the clever ploys indulged by the inventive creators to capture your curiosity. Anyway, momentarily suspend your daily concerns and revel in this selection of novelty, kitsch and whimsy objects. Needless to say, today’s quirky or crass could be tomorrows object of desire for savvy collector’s.
