Fluid Abstract odyssey

Sinuous movement and a transcendent kinesis, inspired by water currents, marine life and the sea are very ubiquitous in James Tower’s sgraffito ceramic decorations, mainly from an underwater perspective. The gentle movement of water reeds, sea forest kelps and other natural abstractions is captured with the use of enticing patterns, rhythm, tension and a fluidity in his ceramic sculptures to create perspectives of sublime motion. His pieces like Nebulae, Sea Piece Opus and Glacier make you feel like you are being drawn you into a submerged Sci Fi like portal, inviting you to float into a fluid tromp e-l’œil dimension.

Tower claimed that his goal was to achieve “a sense of completion to satisfy a longing for a serene harmonious whole, which contains dynamism and vitality, to fulfill our intellectual and spiritual needs.” This was even more poignant to him by the fact that he regarded it as such an elusive quality. At the age of 17, James spent time in Australia and New Caledonia, where it would have been hard to ignore the dynamism of the oceans. He later stated that he searched for ways to convey a sense of integrity, releasing internal, serene and harmonious tensions, in a world where abundant energy remains calm. ‘The objects that I strive to do are  attempts at hymns to the beauty of the natural world’.

A centenary exhibition of this British trailblazer in contemporary ceramic art and sculpture is currently running at the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath, UK, till the 24th November, 2019. This exhibition consists of over 50 works by Tower, dating from the 1930s to the 80s. Many of these works will be on public display for the first time.

Azure allure in Saint Raphael

Numerous artists such as Ceczanne, Monet, Matisse, Corbusier, Capron, Renoir, Massier and Picasso, to name a few, were attracted to the Cote D’Azur for its radiant light, enriching hues and captivating vistas. Ceramicist Lauren Kearns, on a recent visit, was so impressed by the vibrancy of Saint Raphael, nestled between the Massif L’Esterel Mountains and the Mediterranean, that she decided to establish a studio there for herself and visiting resident artists. She discovered that the rugged ochre outcrops, red cliffs, numerous inlets and coves,  juxtaposed against the emerald and azure waters, had an irresistable presence that was very invigorating.

IaRex l’Atelier/IARE studio, St Raphael

Lauren has created a spacious, fully equipped studio environment in a quiet location, bathed in natural light and in close proximity to local markets, cafes and eateries. An invitation has been extended from Lauren to all artists from professional to casual to join her program and interact with other resident artists and participate in some of the workshops while also imbibing the rich culteral heritage and embracing the beautiful, idyllic enviroment.

Saint Raphael is easily accesible to the Nice Airport, directly by bus. By car along the coast it is 1h to Nice, 1hr to Antibes, 40 minutes to Cannes, 1h2 to St. Tropez with many charming villages in between. The train station is in the center of the town, with a train direct to and from Paris. The outdoors is easily accessible, by car and bicycle, as are main European cities by train.

Lauren Kearns

Lauren acts as a surpervisor, instructor, mentor, co-ordinator and artist for the International Artists Residency Exchange in Saint Raphael, bringing 37 years of experience as a ceramic artist.

‘My primary interest in creating is to make objects which are used in daily life, that bring us beauty and joy. I feel that creating objects from hand, in ways that have existed throughout time, is vital and necessary. I hope my work reminds people of the art of the hand made. In the use of objects and appreciation of art, one’s life is enriched, as it serves as a reminder of history and the connections we have to the arts.’

Current and future workshops

Andrew Martin

14th October – 25th October 2019

This workshop will focus on designing and slip casting complex forms with “simple” molds. Our goal is to explore new or latent ideas. Participants should come with a clear goal and willing to take risks. This two-week workshop will be an intuitive and practical exploration of how to work with patterns and molds, beyond the repetition of forms. The emphasis will be on using paper cut-outs to develop forms for molds and casting, and two-dimensional pattern-making for constructing three-dimensional forms.

Lorna Meaden

April 9-18, 2020

In this one-week workshop in Saint Raphael, France, participants will refine and expand their vocabulary of functional form. We will begin with making simple pots for daily use such as cups and bowls. We will move on to stretch our ideas about function, including more complex forms such as pitchers, ewers, scoops, spoons, and serving dishes. While focusing on form, we will explore surface decoration. Investigations of surface will incorporate texture, and line. Our pots will be altered, stamped, and drawn on. We will not miss the chance to absorb the cultural opportunities offered by southern France! All skill levels welcome. Bring your ideas and sense of adventure.

Carol Guthro

May 11 – 22, 2020

In this 10 day week workshop Carol Gouthro will demonstrate her signature Segment Mold Process. Learning Carol’s innovative mold making technique will allow you to incorporate pleated, undulating and expressive forms into your ceramic vessels and sculptures, like those we marvel at in Carol's masterworks. We will also work with wooden drop molds. Carol will demonstrate how to combine, cut and re-assemble shapes to arrive at many differing expressions of form.

We will follow Carol’s rich, multi-layered approach to surface from wet clay, bone dry to bisque. Techniques for creating depth and texture will be explored, including the use of textured skins to wrap forms and clay sprig molds to embellish. Focus on color and pattern will be given through numerous demonstrations using slips, underglazes, stains, wax, shellac and paper patterns. Carol will share the many processes that she has developed in over 30 years of working with clay.

Deb Schwartzkopf

15th October – 26th October 2020

Led by Seattle-based studio potter, instructor, and inspiring artist Deb Schwartzkopf, this exploratory workshop is for everyone working in clay with an interest in tableware. Come and discover the many ways functional forms can be pieced together from thrown and hand-built parts.

Let’s explore tableware. Come design and create your own place setting! This hands-on workshop is a guided, creative time. We will start with a Plate, Bowl and Cup… And then move into vases, pitchers, and platters! Identify and investigate the relationships within and between different forms. How does the plate meet the table? How is the
meal framed? Is the handle comfortable? What gesture are you capturing in your pitcher? There are so many elements to consider in the creative processes of designing and making.

Doug Peltzman

19th April – 26th April 2021

This is a workshop fit for beginner to experienced makers. We will focus in on designing, making, and finishing high fire porcelain tableware in an electric kiln. The relationship between form and surface decoration will be explored through practice, demonstration and discussion. Doug will share his methodologies on carving and inlaying slip into leather hard clay and bisque fired clay. As a group, we will spend time collecting imagery and textures to apply to the surface of our work. We will discuss the meaning and intention behind the pots we make and look to “play” as a way to explore new ideas. Doug will also share his strategies for glazing and making pots to hold runny translucent glazes. This class will provide an array of tools and techniques for using texture, line, and color in your work. Taking your ideas and concepts to the next level can be tricky, together we can share our experiences and help push each other to develop our work beyond our expectations.

Jan Edwards Workshop

Handbuilding Pots for your Table : for All Levels of Experience

30 Apr 2021 – 12 May 2021

Don’t you wish you had a good Fish Platter, or a tall Vase, or perhaps a set of Sushi Plates? You name it… we’ll try to make it. We will spend our time exploring a multitude of ways to make pots for the table…bowls, cups, plates, pitchers, platters, butter dishes, whatever we want to make, without the use of a potter’s wheel.

We’ll use Terra Cotta Clay and colorful slips and stains to embellish our pots… the traditional Mediterranean materials. There’s a cornucopia of decorative techniques to be explored. Your aesthetic will dictate the look, be it classic or crazy, wild or sublime. After our pots are fired in both bisque and glaze firings, they are beautiful and safe to use for food and drink.

Sue Tirrell Workshop

Indelible: Pottery as a vehicle for personal storytelling and expression

14 May 2021 – 23 May 2021

Explore the connection between form, narrative and surface design by drawing, painting and carving on leather-hard clay. Bring a sketchbook of your favorite source material and be ready to incorporate new sensory and cultural influences to create a library of imagery unique to your time in beautiful Southern France! Participants will be guided in the process of distilling these ideas into dynamic, colorful surface design; giving individual stories universal appeal.

This workshop is appropriate for makers of all levels. Participants should be comfortable constructing simple vessel forms or tile—hand-built and/or wheel-thrown—to be decorated in the leather-hard state using sgraffito, mishima, trailing and painting techniques. The pace of the workshop will allow for everyone to explore their own studio practice as well as area attractions such as museums, hiking, beaches and food! Take home a narrative keepsake that can’t be purchased in a tourist shop!

Supine Flames sculpture by Melanie Newcombe

‘Supine Flames’ sculpture by Melanie Newcombe

The radical Cubist art developed at the beginning of the 20th Century by Braques and Picasso was one of the first forms of abstract art. The Cubists challenged conventional forms of representation, such as perspective, which had been the rule since the Renaissance. Their aim was to develop a revolutionary new way of seeing which reflected the streamlined modern age.

Picassos realisation in 1907 that African art had a deeper mission to give expression and form to an artists subconscious forces, in order to confront and conquer their inner fears, stands as one of the motivating factors that triggered the beginning of abstract art. The Cubists inspired many other artists around the same time to break free from the constraints of established art, which had remained the same for centuries. Matisse was also capturing a serenity through simplification of ideas and form, believing details lessened the purity of lines and harmed the emotional intensity. Brancusi was approching his art on a similar tragectory, where he belived the mind recognised form with a more minimalist perspective and saw movement as a flash of spirit, stripped of unessecary detail. Intuitive perception didn’t require too much cumbersome detail to grasp the form of a subject, as it had already filled in the spaces ahead of the intellect.

‘Joy of Dance’   Dan McDermott

Similarily, at the beginning of the 20th century, dance was also undergoing a revolution with the promotion of a spontaneous avant garde style of modern dance. Isadora Duncan was one of the key proponants during the early 1900’s, who toured Europe and America, believing dance to be a luminous expression of the soul. She wasn’t enthralled by the strict disiplines enacted by the European ballet schools and intitially rejected there routines in favour of a more free form dance style. “The beauty of a moving figure lies in its intention, and not in the expertness of its gymnastic.” Other creative dancers like Loi Fuller and Josephne Baker were also touring Europe during this era, promoting free spirited dance expressions of raw, unhinibited movement. Up to the 20th century, theatrical dance was by and large, content to be associated with dramatic spectacles of storytelling.

The evolution of abstract art converged with the introduction of avant garde dance performances at this time, where the shape, energy and rhythm of the expressive powers of dance were conveyed in a more minimalistic manner while combined with poetic abstractions. The risk, chaos and unpredictability of the abstract reflected the motion of dance movement, especially if it was synchopated, free form avant-garde or trance oreintated. The utilisation of line, textures and space in abstract, stylised and semi abstract art adapted nicely to the spirit of artistic dynamic motion.

In this post I am examining the abstract styles in sculpture and ceramic forms and decorations that allude to a free and sponataeous aesthetic conveying the expression of movement, rythym and dance.

English whimsical clayart vibrancy

Two female American clayart creatives in the English countryside

A perfect antiidote for grey overcast skies is colouful, uplifting, dercorative objects and both of the female ceramicists below employ a natural illustrative freedom and flair that elevates the spirit. Sharon Laslett’s flowing brushstrokes flow like a capricious breeze to emulate her Californian free spirit, which she has transplanted to Essex. Likewise, Stacey Manser Knight expresess a delightful innocence and idiosynchratic whimsy from her studio in Brighton, channeling the seaside and her chidhood memories of visits to the woods and all the flora and fauna she discovered.

Sharon Laslett

Sharon-Laslett-Orange ceramic Jug

Sharon Laslett – Orange Jug

The process of throwing, turning and decorating always feels fresh and new to me, each piece taking on a life of its own. My inspiration for ceramic decoration comes from a combination of shapes found in nature, memories of light and colour found in California, where I lived for many years, and artists such as Matisse and Kandinsky along with the lavishly decorated Iznik pottery of Turkey. My clay of choice is Valentine’s KGM Body, which I love for its smoothness and creamy colour, and the fact that it can also be fired to stoneware temperature. In addition, I use a standard terracotta for those earthy days! The longer I work with clay the more I want to explore its malleable qualities. I love to poke and prod, sometimes until I ruin a piece, just to see exactly how far I can push those plastic boundaries. Sharon is based in her small back garden studio on the Hertfordshire and Essex border in Bishop’s Stortford.

Stacey Manser-Knight

“I am largely self-taught. Over many years I have worked to develop my skills and style, and make highly decorative but functional pieces. I work in red earthenware clay which is coated with a white clay slip layer. This gives me a surface to draw through. Once the piece has reached a near dry state, I illustrate it and pipe on a thick clay preparation, to achieve the raised surfaces. This is then fired, coloured and then a clear over glaze applied. Fired once more, it is now ready for the gold lustre rim highlights and, on-glaze details, such as the stripes on bees. For inspiration I use happy memories. I have no set designs so all pieces are individual.”

I was born in the U.S.A & grew up in New York and Oxford in England where I studied art at Oxford’s Banbury Art School and at Brighton University.

Foxes, Herons, Turtles and Otters are our neighbours. Early morning walks in the woods with Michael and our dog Nell, gardening, and studio time fill most days. ”

“To be held in the hands or touched to the lips, these are intimate objects.  The forms I make engage the threshold of subjectivity by offering a conduit for nourishment into the body or between bodies.  The experience is more than visceral, as the body’s pursuit of sensual experience is tied into the process of making existence meaningful on all levels.  How we choose to feed ourselves and others is connected not only to our sensations of hunger and gratification, but also to our deeper perceptions of ourselves, and of the larger stories we live by.”

Soledad Christie

San Pedro de Atacama, Chile

Soledad Christie was born in Viña del Mar, Chile in 1962 and intitially trained as Graphic Designer She has  been living in San Pedro de Atacama for 27 years. In the midst of the immensity of a powerful territory, I find the strength of an ancestral language, the pre-Columbian pottery. “My work is inserted in this ancestral tradition of pottery. The fundamental thing is the relationship with clay and its qualities. Each piece that model takes me to the next, and it is during the slow process of hand modeling, where I explore, trying to find a rhythm between, volume and shape, stillness and movement, balance and tension.”

“The pieces are modeled by hand, using the old techniques of pinching and lulo. The superficial quality is obtained with the burnished with river stone. The burning is the traditional burning in a hole with guano, combined with a low temperature burning in a gas oven. I recognize the landscape of the Atacama Desert and the Andean Altiplano as part of my own identity. The silence, the solitude, the light and the vastness of this territory have shaped my being and my work. ”

Mariana Mae – Easy To Breathe

Ojai, California

Mariana Mae is an artist and visionary native to Coyoacan, Mexico, currently residing in the Valley of Ojai. Easy To Breathe is driven by the reverence of story telling through ancestral craft + honoring the purpose of an object through ritual. Mariana Mae draws inspiration from the freedom of form and the fragile, forgiving elements of our Earth. With deep admiration for primitive pathways, each ceramic piece is individually crafted by hand.

Ceramc handpainted figure vase – Morena Akbal

Akbal Folk Ceramics keeps alive some of the traditional methods of working with clay, just as many of the ancestral cultures once did and are still doing. With admiration and respect, Akbal Morana Pez keeps them as a guide and along with Nature uses them as a source for inspiration. She works with the intentions of love, healing, beauty, peacefulness, equality and freedom while expanding them as an important direction in her creative process to manifest ceramica pieces to connect with the Earth. Pieces that nourish your Soul.

“It is deeply important to me to be able to create with a natural material such as clay. Working the clay allows me to have a strong creative process. I experience a magical dance with the fire as the clay pieces are being transformed. The next day is such a blessing to witness the transformation, those fragile clay pieces transmuted into strong ceramic bodies. While still warm, I enjoy moving the ashes to discover the different colours, different fire stories. I love to use earth to hold my food, its a whole nutrition.”

“Using a traditional way of cooking the mud. A process of 6 hrs approx where I am in total connection with the fire and the pieces that are being transformed. The heat grows slowly and steadily, but after a time it becomes strong, much stronger and constant too. Once baked I feel powerful, totally transformed and blissfully exhausted. It is an extraordinary sensation!”

My work is a reflection of my Mexican roots. The forms are created like stories in the works as I transform and mutate a magical fusion of colors, shapes and a way of life into them. My desire in my clay creations is to express the “Human Spirit” as infinite, all knowing and always in a state of grace.

“My work to a large degree responds to instinct; generating risk of the own tension of the material conceiving unique and unrepeatable pieces in form and color. I like the handprint, the spontaneous gesture, often impulsive without a reason, open to the eventuality of change in the creative process, open to the birth of new images and propositions.

The surfaces and shades are enamels of creation and own experimentation. Being an enormous work of tests to arrive at suitable formulas, which transforms into an enjoyment by the Alchemy also satisfying my restlessness of investigation.”

Ewen Henderson footed teabowl

Ewen Henderson footed teabowl

Mixed laminated clays, 9 x 12 cm

Ewen Henderson described clay as ‘fluxed earth’ and saw pottery necessarily as a form of abstract sculpture whose material transformation and disintegration he sought to capture and celebrate. The roughness of his sculptures can be seen to have the same spontaneity and vigour as a sketch. Beyond his built up layers of clay, paper and grog, Henderson seeks to freeze – or rather, fire – the transience of matter.

Swiss ceramicist, Kaufmann creates sculptures that are born out of his fascination with the raw material, the process of making and the relationship between material and space.  He views the goal of his work as being the experiment that occurs during all processes involved, including firing and post-firing interventions.  The unexpected events that can happen in the kiln results in what he deems a gift, offered by the material, beyond the will.

John Ward exhibition – Erskine, Hall and Coe

London, 2019

There is something compelling about the making of pots, regardless of function, which keeps me within the particular sphere; they are the focus of some many interests and associations. My aim is to make pots which have simple forms with integral decoration and aspects which can interact with the environment in interesting ways; to try and express a balance between these dynamic qualities and a sense of stillness or containment. Form above all, but expressed through light and colour’ – John Ward

Ward, now in his eighties, is one of the most distinguished of the modern British potters, having studied under Hans Coper and Lucie Rie at the Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts in the 1960’s.

His works are simple and complex, both in their forms and decoration.  Whilst Ward is best known for his black and white vessels, our exhibition features a selection of these alongside a varied range of colours and scale.  Ward has said of his style,

‘Living near the sea has probably had an effect on the banded decoration I use, either reflecting the movement of water and waves or the dips and folds of the strata revealed in cliff faces. This in turn has affected form.’

Influenced by the clean and pure forms of ancient Chinese and Egyptian pre-glaze pottery, early Cypriot pottery and early Persian bowls, Ward uses flattened coils of clay and a pinched base to produce the hollow forms that characterise his sculptural vases. Ancient influences are accompanied by an interest in varying aspects seen in the work of more recent and acclaimed potters;  the formal strength of Hans Coper, Lucie Rie’s use of light and colour and Ian Godfrey’s experimentation with form and texture. Sometimes altered by cutting and rejoining to create ridges and grooves between curving surfaces, a pebble is then used to burnish the work. Ward’s pots are twice-fired in a kiln and he uses only matt glazes.

‘Golden Kingdoms —  Luxury and Legacy in the Ancient Americas’ – The Met, NY

This exhibition is running till Sunday, 28th May

The artists of the Ancient Americas crafted sacred objects from precious metals and stones purely for ritual and regalia rather then tools, weapons, or currency. Their creations were instrumental in expressing political power, religious beliefs and social status. Gold and silver was used in abundance and given elevated regard but other precious materials like jade and turquoise were also held in high esteem for their colour and luminescence. Associated with fire, time, royal power, and political succession, turquoise was an exotic material favoured by Mexica lapidary artists. This precious imported mineral was used to make the regalia of select Nahua deities and Mexica rulers. Thousands of turquoise objects have been found at the Templo Mayor.
Most of the objects displayed in this exhibition carried a sacred power and had symbolically charged iconography while being passed down over numerous generations from 2500 BC to European colonisation in the 16th Century.

Standing Mayan Ruler ceramic figurine

AD-600-800

This ceramic figurine shows  the elaborate and burdensome regalia of Maya rulers. The belt ornament in the shape of a head with three celts is similar to the set of plaques on view here. Maya blue pigment-a combination of indigo and palygorskite, a type of clay-covers the figurine, evoking the green of the quetzal feathers in the headdress and of the jade pectorals, earrings, and belt ornaments. Holding a shield in his left hand, this ruler may be celebrating a military victory or reenacting a triumph.

Remarkably well preserved by the oxygen-deprived environment at the bottom of the Sacred Cenote, this ceramic bowl was found filled with twenty pellets of copal—a tree resin used as a ritual incense—and five jadeite beads of various shapes. In this distinctive testament of Maya devotion, the materials symbolically unite the clay of the earth, the sap of the tree, and the green of maize.

Stela with Queen IMutal Ahaw-,AD-761--Maya

Stela with ‘Queen IMutal Ahaw’

AD-761–Maya

Maya dynasts often revered their wives and mothers as vital players in their claims to the throne by featuring them as important subjects for commissioned artworks. This stela, from an unknown site in the Usumacinta River region, is a masterful depiction of such a royal woman. The inscription refers to her as Ix Mutal Ahaw, or “royal lady of Mutal.” Mutal refers to the powerful dynasty at the city of Tikal, Guatemala, or a related lineage at the site of Dos Pilas. She holds a ceremonial bar from which a supernatural serpent emerges. A version of the Maya God of Lightning, K’awiil, appears from the serpent’s mouth. This image of a queen in her regalia of resplendent quetzal feathers and jade ornaments underscores the central role of women in conjuring deities.

Bells constitute one of the largest classes of metal objects deposited in the Sacred Cenote. Likely attached to clothing, they attest to the auditory aspects of ritual practices at Chichen Itza and other sacred centers. These cast gold bells and pendants were produced in the Veraguas-Chiriquí region of ancient Costa Rica and Panama.

The sparkling blue-green turquoise mineral sets off four pyrite serpents, symbols of royal power. A pyrite mirror, now lost, once graced the center, obscuring the two perforations used to attach the disk to a garment. This is one of two disks found in an offering in one of the substructures of the Castillo, the central pyramid platform at Chichen Itza, which was built over a cenote. This represented a portal medium similar to the 8 sided Chinese Ba Qua and the Egyptian Magic Square.

Chac Mool sculpture

AD 800-1250, Maya

Sculptures of this type, featuring a reclining male figure holding a bowl on his torso, were given the invented name Chac Mool by nineteenth-century explorers during an archaeological expedition to Chichen Itza. The figure is adorned with a headdress, earflares, bracelets, and anklets, all likely depicted as if they were made of jade. The bowl served as a receptacle for sacrificial liquids and burnt offerings and may have been symbolic of the circular cenotes.

Clay dimensions and Zen

One of the underlying traditions that permeates life in Japan, arising from their culture and Zen Buddhist/Shinto influences is mindfulness, contemplation and a deep respect for nature and its rhythms. Objects in the process of decay or conception are considered to be more evocative then in full bloom because they reinforce the sense of transience. This is encapsulated by the deliberate attention given to oppositional forces, created for example, between contrasting textures (rough to smooth) and asymmetrical forms, to allude to the dynamic of the incomplete. The drawing of the enso circle in training, which is never shown as closed or complete, is a reminder of this aspect.

Shenso-circle Japan

The distinctive Japanese aesthetic speaks from within and is reflected in their art by the expression of several qualities including kanso (asymmetry), fukinsei (simplicity) and koko (basic). Furthermore, the quality of shizen (keeping it natural, spontaneous and without pretence) is consistently expressed along with the recognition of the nature of Kami, which relates to the ‘spiritual essence’ and ‘spirit’ that inhabits all animate and inanimate forms.

Further enhancement is also achieved through these following aspects: Yugen — subtleness and not obvious, Datsuzoku — unfettered by convention and Seijaku — solitude, stillness and tranquillity. The concept of Shibusa also considers similar qualities – simple, subtle, emptiness and unobtrusive beauty (understated).

Artistic transcendence usually nurtures an innate awareness of these traditional subtleties. How much of these cultural perceptions filter into the consciousness of the Japanese artist and are executed is hard to fathom and correlate but there is an obvious, subtle, tangible presence pervading most of their art. The nature-centric shinto also celebrates the landscape and the wholeness of creation and has over 100,000 shrines and around 79,000 priests, so its input would be plausible.
Assembled here is a collection of Japanese pottery that has caught my attention over the past 12 months, displaying their refined aesthetic, skilled craftsmanship, reverence for the ceramic arts and Zen empathy that characterises the contemporary clayarts of Japan.

Stoneware bottle with the nuka oatmeal glaze over black slip accents, top and bottom and iron and black glaze accents –Craig Bird

‘Less means more’ by Craig Bird (I,Potter)

How is it possible to strip away the unwanted encumbrances, additions, distractions, to do away with all the superfluous that can weigh down an object? There is a palpable complexity to simplicity and in its creation, it is never born from over thought, conscious action, rather it springs from a disciplined and well practiced extension of years of unconscious repetition earned over decades of “doing”. A simple object exudes a clarity of idea and purpose since there is nothing to clutter the direct intent of its function in a classic example of “less means more”. As a potter, I know I can be guilty of “more means more” and though I won’t blame our modern times for that stern indoctrination, it is not a simple thing to work consciously in an unconscious manner, for most of us, it goes against our accumulated experiences. It might be this fact alone that makes the creation of simple, honest pots both so difficult and so greatly admired, because quite frankly, simple is just awfully hard.

Out of the azure blue

During the latter half of the 1800’s, French ceramicist Theodore Deck was so impressed by the colours, lustre’s and glazes of the Iznik wares that he was motivated to reproduce them. He successfully achieved this after closely analysing some broken Iznik tiles obtained from the Middle East. The best known of his glazes was a turquoise/blue colour which became known as ‘Deck Bleu’ and it resembled the Azure blues which had consistent representation in architecture and art along the Silk Road trading network. The potter Eugène-Victor Collinot was also creating orientalist inspired wares at this time.
Similarly in England in 1875 , William De Morgan and designer Christopher Dresser also  experienced Persian phases where the Persian palettes of blue, turquoise, manganese purple, green, Indian red, and lemon all featured in there designs. In addition to this, during the latter half of the nineteenth century, the Persian decorations and azure blues also appeared from established ceramic companies like Longwy, Minton, Zsolnay, Sevres, Cantagalli and Louis Tiffnay glass designs. Just like the ubiquitous blue colour glazes and Oriental decorative styles had been developed and traded at  several pottery centres along the Silk Road from Jingdezhen to Rishtan and Iknik, they were also widely developed in Europe.

Planet Neptune Azure blue

Planet Neptune Azure blue, Voyager photo

The azure blue colour was emulated in ceramics along the Silk route because the ancients in Egypt, Persia, China and other locations believed it was connected to Neptune and its associated qualities of compassion, good fortune and subtle mystical instincts. The Egyptians named Neptune Nu, which meant “primeval waters” and “ocean of aethers” and the oldest of the Egyptian Gods was also named Nu.

Egyptian blue was a pigment made up of a mixture of silica, lime, copper, and an alkali. Its colour was due to a calcium-copper tetrasilicate CaCuSi4O10 of the same composition as the naturally occurring mineral cuprorivaite. It was made in Egypt during the third millennium BC, and is the first synthetic pigment produced there, continuing in use until the end of the Greco-Roman period (332 BC–395 AD)

That elusive melon taste

I’d given up eating watermelon because the seedless variety was dominating what was on offer at my local supermarkets and taste-wise, the flavour had practically disappeared. Also colour wise, I always thought it was a shame to eliminate the black seeds from the watermelon and cynically replace them with these softer, anaemic seeds. However, recently I came across a piece of watermelon at an organic shop where it was great to see the vivid pink hues juxtaposed against its black seeds and it was wonderful to get reacquainted with the original divine taste. Maybe because it was organic and biodynamic, there were layers to the flavour that I hadn’t experienced before.
According to Tao principals, hardness and black have Yang attributes which contribute to attracting the Yin qualities of sweetness. On reflection, I understood that removing the black seeds had taken the flavour with them. This turned out to be an act of pure marketing madness — lets remove the inconvenience of these pesky black seeds and sacrifice the taste in the process.
To celebrate my rediscovery with the taste sensation of the watermelon, this post celebrates watermelon pink and other pink hues and their combinations with black.

Revering the Earth

Most ancient cultures practised rituals that displayed a reverence for the earth. This usually took the form of celebrations that ritualistically encouraged healthy crops for the coming year and the earth being praised as a good source of sustenance. The Green Corn Ceremony (Busk) is an annual ceremony practised among various Native American peoples associated with the beginning of the yearly corn harvest. The ceremony was marked with dancing, feasting and fasting and religious observations. Likewise, the Pagans and Druids liked to worship mountains and sacred trees along with  various Earth Goddess figures.

In the East, the Earth Element was revered for its ability to balance all elements and heal, exemplified by the Chinese emperor exclusively wearing yellow, (symbolic of Earth). The Japanese favoured anagama ceramics for their tea ceremony, due to the fact they were fired in kilns built into the earth and experienced longer firings which strengthened the Earth element. They believed this extended exposure enhanced the quality of the Earth as this element was nourished by the Fire element

In Hebrew, the name Adam suggested the colour red, or “red earth” and is related to the Hebrew word “adama” 0r earth. It was believed that the first man came from earth, taken from the red soil. According to the Tanakh, Bible, Quran, the Hadith and other writings, Adam was formed from clay, and then life was breathed into him.

Shape and appearance also influence an earthly perception. Vessels of a symmetrical form with balance give the impression of being more grounded, as do earthy palettes and shapes that are bottom heavy with a low centre of gravity. Squat shaped pottery and objects tapering to a large base also convey an earthly appearance of being grounded. Solid, heavy pieces made from dense materials also have this effect, as do rougher textures (more yang). Yang chi moves in a downward direction towards the earth.. Horizontal lines also allude to being grounded and support earthiness.

The imagery presented here is a rumination of  the terrestrial diversity of earth and its related creative products.
