Angels and Doves in the arts

Pietro Melandri ceramic angel

Pietro Melandri ceramica angel, Faenza

The dove has been a symbol of peace and innocence for thousands of years in many different cultures. In Ancient Greek and Roman mythology, it was a symbol of love and the renewal of life and in ancient Japan, a dove carrying a sword symbolised the end of war. Doves were regarded as sacred animals, and many depictions appeared in art where they appeared with the goddess of love and friendship, particuarly for Aphrodite and Venus.

The iconic dove stands for peace and harmony, inner tranquility, purity and spirit. Angels have been associated with similar attributes but tend to towards guidance, protection, blessings, triumph and victory.

In the past, people have turned to these images when seeking solace and calm and in these cathartic and catalytic times, their presence is uplifting and welcome.

In the early 1900s, music publishers in the USA had drawn the connection that the marketability of sheet music was directly related to the quality and artistic input of the covers. The NY firm of Leo Fiest promoted the artistic development of decorative covers where the beauty of the design and colour scheme was solely important or with illustrative covers, the story of the song influenced the art.

The inclusion of enticing cover art in the creation of a brilliant album was also recognised as a valuble marketing asset by the record companies, especially from the 50’s onwards.. Along with the essential element of the music it became a definitive part of how the package was percieved and it became a potent cultural influence. Abstract, avant garde art became more aligned with modern jazz music releases in the 50’s and acted as a subtle art lesson for many of the music connoisseurs. Surrealist art, collages and provocative art also featured in the 60s with the likes of Mati Klarwein’s art for Miles Davis Bitches Brew LP album and the quirky, humorist art of Robert Crumb on Joplin’s Cheap Thrills album.

Browsing through a large album collection was like visiting an art gallery, which is why Tony Bennett said of the marvellous album covers of the 50’s that, when you bought a record, “you felt like you were taking home your very own work of art”. Incisive portrait photography was also introduced at this time along with ambitious photographic themes and exotic graphics as used on Axis Bold As Love from Hendrix. Klaus Voormann’s pop artwork on the Beatles Revolver was also praised for the classic 1966 album. When he heard the tracks for the recording at the Abbey Rd studios he was so shocked by the extent of their innovation that he felt a radical piece of artwork was needed, leading to his monochrome, psychedelic and Beardsley inspired sleeve art. Bold, artistc and original cover art had now become entrenched with the release of music.

John Lennon asked Klaus Voormann to create a design for the Revolver album. Manager Brian Epstein was so enthralled with the result that they approached more art designers for the upcoming Sgt Peppers.

For ‘Tomorrow Never Knows” John Lennon hoped to sound nothing like his usual self. “I want my voice to sound like the Dalai Lama chanting from a mountaintop, miles away,” he proclaimed in the studio. Engineer Geoff Emerick achieved that effect by running Lennon’s voice through the rotating speaker of a Leslie cabinet,  “That is bloody marvelous!” Lennon exclaimed repeatedly after hearing his effect. McCartney’s reaction was equally joyful: “It’s the Dalai Lennon!”   There was no other place for this track on the album but the end. “Eleanor Rigby,” “I’m Only Sleeping,” “Love You To” and “She Said She Said” were all bold steps toward the unknown — “Tomorrow Never Knows” was the jump from the cliff.

Promotional flair in the clayarts

Promotional acumen and marketing savvy rarely goes astray when it comes to selling your art. Some artists prefer to maintain a low profile and let their art do the talking, others relish the opportunity to be extroverted and indulge the exposure and promotional opportunities that the trading provides.

Sao Paulo priestess of vivacity and art

Isabelle Tuchband with her large hand painted vase of roses

Isabelle Tuchband considers her art and ceramics to be a vehicle for love and joy. She expresses as much movement and colour as a carnivale samba parade and believes that music and dance are her prime sources of inspiration. Her Franco Brazilian background and  being the daughter of the French painter Emile Tuchband, along with being influenced by Chagall and Matisse is also apparent in her use of a lively palette of vivid colour and spontaneous brush strokes.

‘I love nature but what inspires me most are the people, the human being, this sensational divine machine … Each face is a map, which I discover and explore and the painting is born.’

Keywest Pottery coastal cool

Key West Pottery is the island home of Key West’s premier gallery and studio for ceramic art and functional pottery situated at 1203 Duval St. in the heart of Oldtown Key West. Adam Russell and Kelly Lever conjur up a lazy, casual summer vibe with their neo tropical caribbean themes highlighting the native pelicans, roosters, fish and flamingos of their Florida locality.

“Our company has grown to include a small army of artisans, creatives, advisors, students and collaborators who are working together with us to produce an authentic expression of this modern, coastal life. Over the last decade, we have developed a brand of tropical modernism that is unique and diverse enough to fit into any home or collection.”

Suzy Birstein, Vancouver, BC

As a child I studied dance while absorbing Hollywood musicals, film noire and the mysteries of Rembrandt. As an adult, I’ve been seduced by the sensuality, spontaneity and intellectual activity of working with Clay, Colour and the essence of Romance. She envisions archetypal icons that amalgamate old world majesty with contemporary charisma: think Queen Nefertiti meets Carmen Miranda or Ganesha meets Lady Gaga.

‘Spirit Ark Navigation by the Stars’ — Arone Meeks

This work is based on navigation by the stars, the boat being both a symbolic vehicle to travel back to the dreaming in and a connection with country, spirit and place. Contained within this vessel are elements of my childhood –  the figure with three dillybags, a guiding light (far left), my mother (far right) and the three mangrove men figures. These designs, like those below the boat in the water, are location markers. They talk of the dugong seagrasses, irukandji jellyfish, sea cucumbers and the spawning coral.

Other key elements to the work are the different stages of personal growth through my years as a painter and printmaker and my relationship to place.

Indigenous art from Aboriginal Myths, Fables and Legends

Deciphering the Dreamtime

Originally, Aboriginal peoples depicted their Dreamings by painting them in the sands and the earth or on rocks and tree bark. Also during ceremonies, they used their bodies for expressing sacred designs and for demonstrating their cultural knowledge and identitiy. They used their art to ensure a continuity of lineage with their ancients and preserve their stories.

The ‘Dreaming’ was refrerred to as “the Law”, being a universal language that governs all people, places, and things and brings them together under one unifing principal. The Dreaming is not connected by a finite period of time but is regarded as being continually occurring and is ever-present in Aboriginal Australian culture. The past and future merge into the present and becomes a conduit to access their transformative/shape shifting Ancestors.

A design made up of different symbols tells the story of a particular mythical ancestral heroes journey to get to his final resting place. The individual symbols map out that journey. When the symbols are arranged together they represent that mythical ancestor journey and the place his spirit now resides.

Shorty Jangala Robertson, ‘Ngapa Jukurrpa – Puyurru (Water Dreaming at Puyurru)’, 2007, acrylic on canvas.

This painting describes a particular place (the Tanami desert and the water courses above and below ground) It refers to an ancient story (the Ancestors singing down the rain in a great thunderstorm) and his spiritual connection to the land and its importance to his culture.

Practical guidance on where to find food and water and where to hunt was also represented in their art narratives. Long curving lines depicted rivers while repeating concentric circles indictaed where to locate water holes and wells. The dreamtime stories also taught them about how to maintain the wellbeing of their lands and live in harmony with each other and the animals. The spiritual relevence and power of a certain location to various people was also revealed.

The symbols in aboriginal art are design specific. Symbols have different meanings depending on which design is being painted. A concentric circle on one design may mean waterhole in one design or camp place in another. Aboriginal art symbols are not like letters or hieroglyphics. They only have a specific meaning when they are within a particular design

Their Dreamings explained how the universe was created, how the land was shaped, and who and what came to live in it. The artists channeled the universal archetypes that manifested through their myths and the original spirit of the land was accsessed via their ceremonies. Using a timeless Dreaming conscioussness, they created an iconography with ceremonial mapping and impressionistic interretation to express connection to land and ancestors.

Ainslie Roberts — ‘The Weeping Opal’

According to Aboriginals from around Andamooka in South Australia, opal was created when their ancestral being was conveyed to earth via a great rainbow. Where the rainbow connected with the land, great rocks and pebbles formed and glittered in the sun with all the colours of the rainbow and opals were born in the Dreamtime.

Kahuna Tiki  statue

Like a mantra, the words Corona Kahunna kept popping up during my early morning meditations. After contemplating this and some tiki images, it became apparent to me that the kahuna tiki was usually depicted with a look of defiance, humour and as a warrior, so I figured the message was to adopt a stance of detachment and being in control as opposed to succumbing to the collective virus fears and uncertainty. Bottom line is, if you find yourself having to battle this oppressive virus, a positive attitude and mindset will be highly supportive for your immunity and survival.

Lemon scented tea tree in my garden (right)

During a session with my Chinese acupuncturist/herbalist, he mentioned how in China, sachet herbs are currently being used with masks to assist breathing and help repel pathogens. Without knowing the Western equivalent of these herbs it was difficult to pursue this any further. But my intuition was pointing towards rosemary, lavender, fresh lemon scented teatree leaves and cinnamon. With further investigation I discovered that this was very similar to the ancient Four Thieves formula (see below) which I now use to enhance my breathing. I already practice deep yogic breathing, with each breath starting from the expansion of the abdomen, but the scented oils help encourage this and acts as a reminder to maintain it. This strengthens the Chung Chi( defence chi) against the Sha Chi (attacking Chi), in this case the external pathogens. Fortunately, apart from the cinnamon, I have access to these herbs in fresh form in my local neighborhood, but I also sourced them in organic oils. I use these with a cloth insert if I choose to wear a mask.

The British Army has issued a spray with Citriodiol,  derived from the oil of Eucalyptus citriodora, or lemon eucalyptus. (link)

The plague doctor

Nostradamus spent several years as a Plague Doctor in France and Italy and used herbs and salves for protection and he didn’t fall to the pestilence. They used gloves, hat and mask of smooth morrocan leather with a satin robe, believing the virus couldn’t latch on so easily or penetrate. Also the beak was filled with the fresh herbs of rosemary, rose, lavender, cinnamon, cloves, lemon  eucalyptus and carnations. There was 2 small holes in the beak from which they drew up air through the herbs. For me, the image of this unusual looking outfit always carries an impression of dread.

The virus challenge

My daughter came down with a fever and spent a horrendous night dealing with its severity, where she used high doses of Vitamin C to subdue the fevers. After a week of exhaustion and weakness she recovered. A week later my oldest son also became feverish, had an aching body and dry cough. He took some Yin Chiao tablets, (popular Asian herbal formual), then went with the Japanese remedy of powderd Kudzu root simmered with an umeboshi plum in water, grated ginger and shoyu, consumed as a soup to boost his immunity. Later this was followed by taking Gan Lu Xiao Du Dan, also a traditional Chinese herbal formula, which has currently been used in China and Taiwan  but needs a consultation with a TCM doctor to obtain it. He also drank organic coconut and cucumber juice (not chilled) to replenish his fluids..  The latter herb formula probably had the most tangible effect on regulating the fever. He recovered without any debilitating fallout after a few days.

Here is a collection of traditional Asian folk food remedies for the lungs

Turnip – steam a whole turnip and eat it. An ancient remedy, popular along the silk road.

Figs – steep fresh or dried figs in boiling water, drink as a tea. Helps to lubricate the lungs.

Olives – eaten fresh or boil 5 olives with 150 grams of fresh radish, consume as soup – a flu remedy

Fresh watercress, consume with soup.

“Silver ear soup” – white fungus (jelly mushroom or white tree ear} soak mushroom for 12 hours, add honey and steam and drink on an empty stomach.

Mulberry cough remedy to lubricate the lungs.– cook on low flame till they dissolve and are reduced to thick syrup, then add honey (organic preferably) – 2 teaspoons 2 times daily

Dry cough – grind walnuts and pine nuts, add honey – slowly cook over low flame until thick, take 2 teaspoons daily with warm water

Crysanthenum tea to detox and clear liver heat ( indirectly helps lungs)

Chronic cough – Combine peanut, jujube dates and honey – make a tea and drink two times daily. The Taoists loved to eat peanuts for longevity because they had unique minerals which their plants obtained from deep feeder roots.

Mung bean, celery, wakame soup is excellent for clearing internal heat problems. Eaten on a regular basis, try to eat at least once a week.

Seaweed, eucalyptus leaves, red capsicum boiled in water for 30 miutes, inhale the vapours. Used in Spain during the Spanish flu.

Pear – cored and steamed – eat 3-4 times daily – if you have cold extremities or diarrhea this is not recommended

Persimmon – stops coughing, dissolves sputum, clears heat

Strawberry  –  mash strawberry with brown sugar, steam and eat three times daily – relieves dry cough and sore throat.

Tea made from dried orange peel helps release stuck mucous. Lubricates lungs.

Water Chestnut helps relieve cough and  phlegm

Foods for the lungs and the 5 Elements

According to the Chinese Five Element theory, the white colour is important for the lungs. Foods included in this category are asparagus, barley, leeks, lima beans, tofu, white sesame, spring onion and rice.

Also to fortify the lungs strengthen the Earth and Water Elements with your diet.

Earth (Spleen-yellow) supports Metal (Lungs-white) – useful foods –  corn, beets, silverbeet,(these have a distinct earthy fragrance), carrots, broad beans, braised beef, yellow squash, fresh green field peas, millet and ginger. [The Earth Element helps tp balance all the other elements which is why one of the master points in acupuncture therapy is Tsu San Li (St36), which is the Earth point on the Earth meridean.

Water (Kidneys–black)  – mushroom, black sesame, black rice, black bean, eggplant, seaweed, pork.

Fire  (Heart-red) controls Metal (Lungs-white) – useful foods – apple, cherries, strawberries, red capsicum, red beans, tomato

Using decor to boost the earth element   – After dividing the floor plan of whole home into 9 equal sectors, favour the middle sector with earthy tones, especially ochre, also adding azure blue with dashes of red and black. The middle is where the Earth element is situated as is Neptune (azure). White highlights also helps the lungs.

Small Works, Great Artists

Erskine, Hall & Coe present their second annual Small Works, Great Artists exhibition.

running till 19 March 2020

Maintaining the gallery’s tradition of representing exceptionally accomplished, international artists, EHC are delighted to introduce the work of Ryūichi Kakurezaki, one of the great living Japanese ceramicists.

Among the many highlights of this show is a colourful sculpture by the legendary Ron Nagle. Two other notable works on display, Châtaigne by Élisabeth Joulia and a bowl by Alev Ebüzziya Siesbye, come from the special Fina Gomez Collection. Gomez, photographer and founder of the Fina Gomez Foundation, amassed over 500 pieces by famous potters, and in 1991 her collection was exhibited at the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris.

The exhibition comprises over 40 works by 21 makers coming from nine countries.

Sylvette David at Vallauris market

Sylvette David (aka Lydia Corbett) at Vallauris market

Photo – Steven Haywood

A bevy of artists had an ongoing intrigue with the creative exploits of Pablo Picasso in France during the Mid Century and that fascination was further enhanced when Sylvette David (Lydia Corbett} became his muse in the 50’s. Her distinctive blond hair and ponytail inspired decorative illustrations of stylized females on countless art objects during this era. Picasso had observed her enigmatic, ethereal beauty from his studio window in rue du Fournas, in Vallauris, for over 12 months before he began to use her as a model for painting and sculptures in 1954. He produced over 60 art pieces during his prolific “Sylvette phase” where he captured her youthful exhuberance in a variety of mediums and styles. As a muse, she relished the opportunity to spend time with Picasso and witness how he worked in silence, while in deep concentration, with a calm descending upon his chaotic studio. Picasso said that when he went into his studio, he left his body outside. She acknowledged that this contemplative appraoch possesses the ability to lead you to an inner world closer to you own soul. Picasso also stated that “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.”

Lydia went on to become an artist in her own right and believes that her time with Picasso and the artist communities in Southern France had a tangible influence on her art. She is still working as an artist at the age of 85, drawing inspiration from the sea and moorlands near he home in South Devon and from animals such as horses and doves.

She has also been influenced by the Japanese artist Hokusai, who claimed that by the age of 73, he partly understood the structure of animals, birds, insects and fishes, and the life of grasses and plants. With further progress, he intended to penetrate their secret meaning by the age of 90 and by 100, he felt that perhaps he might truly reach the level of the marvelous and the divine. “When I reach 110, each dot, each line will possess a life of its own” he said. He was in it for the long haul and I feel Lydia also intends to aspire to these chronological, mystical concepts.

Uplifting floral decor

Floral arrangement with French pottery

Probably the simplest way to introduce vibrationally uplifting energy into an indoor environment is with fresh flowers and plants. For intrinsically pure chi, refreshing fragrances and captivating colours they cannot be surpassed. Extremely versatile for decorative design, they introduce the captivating elements of rejuvenation, rebirth, beauty, growth, renewal and optimism. Decorative 3D objects that recreate images of flowers and botanicals also can have a comparable impact, particularly with ceramics because of their ability to reproduce vivid colours and fine detail.

Each flower has a distinctive color, fragrance and essence that reinforces their unique signature. For styling, colour combinations and simplicity they are a design masterclass. It’s always a pleasure observing how they are adapted and interpreted in design and decoration.

The despair on the joeys face above reflects the depth of the current climate crisis in Australia and possibility of dire consequences in the future. The harrowing imagery now appearing can be distressing and much effort will be required to rebuild from the destruction and ensure future habitats for the plants, birds and fauna. Thoughts of futility are now appearing and should be replaced with affirmative beliefs that positive solutions have prevailed. How stark does it have to be to heed the warnings and admit the current approach is not working. The myopic outlook is quite staggering. British naturalist Sir David Attenborough stated in The Guardian that it was  “palpable nonsense” to suggest that Australia’s bushfire crisis has nothing to do with climate change. “We have been putting things off year after year. We’ve been raising targets, saying ‘oh well, if we do it in the next 20 years ……’ the moment of crisis has come.”

The beautiful native animals of Australia deserve a safe and sustainable future as do the populace. Suzanne Milthorpe, national environment laws campaigner at the Wilderness Society claims Australia is vulnerable to species extinction and the current bushfire crisis has exacerbated that severely. “We need not just to return to pre-bushfire levels but to aim for health and resilience and against further shock. This is an unprecedented catastrophe – the first at this scale – but it won’t be the last.”

Patrick Shia Crabb – abstract ceramic shard vessels

Shard bottle – Patrick Crabb USA

The Studio Artists’ Gallery

Patrick Crabb regards his ceramic art as the culmintion of a magical journey that has evolved over 40 years, following a myriad of paths of discovery to draw on numerous sources, that continue to act as a wellspring for his creativity. This includes his “deconstruction approach”  using the resurrection of shards/fragmentation, which was inspired by artist Rick Dillingham from the 1970’s era. Also included are his nature treks into the American Southwest, with inspiration from broken pot shards by the Native Americans. Additionally, his international travels each year contribute to an ongoing admiration for ancient artifacts of various countries giving a consistent source of inspiration.

His artistic sojourns have provided fertile interpretations of container vessels and ancient figures, with incisive insights into their inherent mysteries. As these connected paths continue to criss-cross each other, his enhanced understanding enrichess his imagery year by year, which he wishes to convey thru his ceramic creations of multi cultural compositions and contemporary artifacts. Recreating a coherency with the broken shards of varied textures and colours adds a new perspective to the rebuilt vessels. The darker raku shards are used to infuse a counterpoint to highlight the brighter pieces and the dynamic of the fractured lines.

Crabb’s large wall platters, vessels and figurative sculptures all incorperate his shard integration while reflecting his intrigue for artifacts from antiquity from his extended travels to witness the  primitive cultures of Asia, Africa and South America.

Goblet or chalice vessel with French Armagnac eggnog

MCM-1950's--Isabelle Petrik-(1909-1978)-n-crackle- glazed chalice vessel

Crackle glazed chalice vessel – Isabelle Petrik

Armagnac Eggnog Goblet

Goblets have a festive look about them, whereas the chalice is more ceremonial in appearance and use, while both conjure the impression of celebration and revelry. The chalice and goblet tend to be large in size and regal in appearance, with the chalice being more ornate and detailed while the goblet is more basic in comparison.

After experiencing the divine nectar of the French Armagnac brandy for the first time recently, which I discovered in preserved figs from France, I decided on a whim to try it for creating an Armagnac Eggnog for the festive season. Its pronunciation rolls off the tongue rather awkwardly, but sounds amusing nonetheless, and I decided to serve it in a goblet, so I am looking at possibilities for an Armagnac Eggnog Goblet. As the Armagnac brandy of Southern France dates back to the fifteenth century and is actually the first wine spirit produced in Europe, I thought its presentation in a goblet would be appropriate.

The goblet name came from the French word ‘gobelet’ around 1300-50 AD, whereas eggnog was derived from from the word ‘nog’, appearing in 1693, which was a wood carved drinking cup. Eggnog is a festive concoction consisting of cream, eggs, sugar and spices mixed with a strong alcoholic beverage or two, created to elevate the spirit. As the chalice can be large enough to function as a compote, I contemplated using one with a more creamy fluid mixture, an Armagnac Le Creme, but settled for a more petite goblet, being appropriate as I didn’t want to start the day with the guests staggering around the garden in a festive stupor. The exotic Armagnac drop has a bit of a kick and cream tends to mask its potency. It also lends itself dramatically to a Crepe Suzzette Flambe.

Downunder, Xmas occurs in the middle of summer, so  a ceramic vessel would also keep it chilled longer then a glass one.

Camelot white Goblet

Camelot White Goblet

The Armagnaçais of the Amragnac region were distilling brandy two hundred years before cognac was made, the process being brought over from Africa into Southern France by the Moors, who had used distillation for making perfumes. Distinct from Cognac, it undergoes a simplified single distillation process at a lower temperature and is similar to the ancient Georgian wines, the whole vine (stems, leaves and grapes) being used in its production, which delivers more threapeutic qualities to the brandy. Armagnac brandies are the earliest examples of distilled wines known in France and also had the title agua ardente, or fire water.

Stories in clay: Arthur Merric Boyd Pottery exbibition

Arthur Merric Boyd (AMB) pottery was established in 1944 by artists Arthur Boyd and John Perceval together with artist and philosopher Peter Herbst and was located at Murrumbeena in Melbourne. Commencing with the manufacture of functional domestic ware to meet post-war demands, the focus of the studio changed by the late 1940s with the production of more colourful, experimental and vibrant one-off earthenware pieces. Coffee and tea sets, bowls, carafes, plates, jugs, Decanter sets, vases and tiles applied to coffee tables, often decorated with angels, beasts, portraits, and Australian flora and fauna motifs emerged out of this collaborative, exuberant environment.

Works by major Australian artists Arthur Boyd, John Perceval, Neil Douglas, Yvonne Boyd and associated potters are on loan from the National Gallery of Victoria, Heide Museum of Modern Art, Shepparton Art Museum — SAM, Monash University Museum of Art and many private collections. A selection of earthenware tiles and ceramic sculptures by Arthur Boyd, John Perceval’s expressive ceramic angel sculptures conceived at AMB Pottery, bowls and other related works are included in this exhibition.

British ceramic modernist – James Tower centenary

Fluid Abstract odyssey

Sinuous movement and a transcendent kinesis, inspired by water currents, marine life and the sea are very ubiquitous in James Tower’s sgraffito ceramic decorations, mainly from an underwater perspective. The gentle movement of water reeds, sea forest kelps and other natural abstractions is captured with the use of enticing patterns, rhythm, tension and a fluidity in his ceramic sculptures to create perspectives of sublime motion. His pieces like Nebulae, Sea Piece Opus and Glacier make you feel like you are being drawn you into a submerged Sci Fi like portal, inviting you to float into a fluid tromp e-l’œil dimension.

Tower claimed that his goal was to achieve “a sense of completion to satisfy a longing for a serene harmonious whole, which contains dynamism and vitality, to fulfill our intellectual and spiritual needs.” This was even more poignant to him by the fact that he regarded it as such an elusive quality. At the age of 17, James spent time in Australia and New Caledonia, where it would have been hard to ignore the dynamism of the oceans. He later stated that he searched for ways to convey a sense of integrity, releasing internal, serene and harmonious tensions, in a world where abundant energy remains calm. ‘The objects that I strive to do are  attempts at hymns to the beauty of the natural world’.

A centenary exhibition of this British trailblazer in contemporary ceramic art and sculpture is currently running at the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath, UK, till the 24th November, 2019. This exhibition consists of over 50 works by Tower, dating from the 1930s to the 80s. Many of these works will be on public display for the first time.
