Shard bottle – Patrick Crabb USA

The Studio Artists’ Gallery

Patrick Crabb regards his ceramic art as the culmintion of a magical journey that has evolved over 40 years, following a myriad of paths of discovery to draw on numerous sources, that continue to act as a wellspring for his creativity. This includes his “deconstruction approach”  using the resurrection of shards/fragmentation, which was inspired by artist Rick Dillingham from the 1970’s era. Also included are his nature treks into the American Southwest, with inspiration from broken pot shards by the Native Americans. Additionally, his international travels each year contribute to an ongoing admiration for ancient artifacts of various countries giving a consistent source of inspiration.

His artistic sojourns have provided fertile interpretations of container vessels and ancient figures, with incisive insights into their inherent mysteries. As these connected paths continue to criss-cross each other, his enhanced understanding enrichess his imagery year by year, which he wishes to convey thru his ceramic creations of multi cultural compositions and contemporary artifacts. Recreating a coherency with the broken shards of varied textures and colours adds a new perspective to the rebuilt vessels. The darker raku shards are used to infuse a counterpoint to highlight the brighter pieces and the dynamic of the fractured lines.

Crabb’s large wall platters, vessels and figurative sculptures all incorperate his shard integration while reflecting his intrigue for artifacts from antiquity from his extended travels to witness the  primitive cultures of Asia, Africa and South America.

Clay dimensions and Zen

One of the underlying traditions that permeates life in Japan, arising from their culture and Zen Buddhist/Shinto influences is mindfulness, contemplation and a deep respect for nature and its rhythms. Objects in the process of decay or conception are considered to be more evocative then in full bloom because they reinforce the sense of transience. This is encapsulated by the deliberate attention given to oppositional forces, created for example, between contrasting textures (rough to smooth) and asymmetrical forms, to allude to the dynamic of the incomplete. The drawing of the enso circle in training, which is never shown as closed or complete, is a reminder of this aspect.

Shenso-circle Japan

The distinctive Japanese aesthetic speaks from within and is reflected in their art by the expression of several qualities including kanso (asymmetry), fukinsei (simplicity) and koko (basic). Furthermore, the quality of shizen (keeping it natural, spontaneous and without pretence) is consistently expressed along with the recognition of the nature of Kami, which relates to the ‘spiritual essence’ and ‘spirit’ that inhabits all animate and inanimate forms.

Further enhancement is also achieved through these following aspects: Yugen — subtleness and not obvious, Datsuzoku — unfettered by convention and Seijaku — solitude, stillness and tranquillity. The concept of Shibusa also considers similar qualities – simple, subtle, emptiness and unobtrusive beauty (understated).

Artistic transcendence usually nurtures an innate awareness of these traditional subtleties. How much of these cultural perceptions filter into the consciousness of the Japanese artist and are executed is hard to fathom and correlate but there is an obvious, subtle, tangible presence pervading most of their art. The nature-centric shinto also celebrates the landscape and the wholeness of creation and has over 100,000 shrines and around 79,000 priests, so its input would be plausible.
Assembled here is a collection of Japanese pottery that has caught my attention over the past 12 months, displaying their refined aesthetic, skilled craftsmanship, reverence for the ceramic arts and Zen empathy that characterises the contemporary clayarts of Japan.

stoneware bottle with the nuka oatmeal glaze over black slip accents, top and bottom and iron and black glaze accents --Craig Bird

Stoneware bottle with the nuka oatmeal glaze over black slip accents, top and bottom and iron and black glaze accents –Craig Bird

‘Less means more’ by Craig Bird (I,Potter)

How is it possible to strip away the unwanted encumbrances, additions, distractions, to do away with all the superfluous that can weigh down an object? There is a palpable complexity to simplicity and in its creation, it is never born from over thought, conscious action, rather it springs from a disciplined and well practiced extension of years of unconscious repetition earned over decades of “doing”. A simple object exudes a clarity of idea and purpose since there is nothing to clutter the direct intent of its function in a classic example of “less means more”. As a potter, I know I can be guilty of “more means more” and though I won’t blame our modern times for that stern indoctrination, it is not a simple thing to work consciously in an unconscious manner, for most of us, it goes against our accumulated experiences. It might be this fact alone that makes the creation of simple, honest pots both so difficult and so greatly admired, because quite frankly, simple is just awfully hard.

Out of the azure blue

During the latter half of the 1800’s, French ceramicist Theodore Deck was so impressed by the colours, lustre’s and glazes of the Iznik wares that he was motivated to reproduce them. He successfully achieved this after closely analysing some broken Iznik tiles obtained from the Middle East. The best known of his glazes was a turquoise/blue colour which became known as ‘Deck Bleu’ and it resembled the Azure blues which had consistent representation in architecture and art along the Silk Road trading network. The potter Eugène-Victor Collinot was also creating orientalist inspired wares at this time.
Similarly in England in 1875 , William De Morgan and designer Christopher Dresser also  experienced Persian phases where the Persian palettes of blue, turquoise, manganese purple, green, Indian red, and lemon all featured in there designs. In addition to this, during the latter half of the nineteenth century, the Persian decorations and azure blues also appeared from established ceramic companies like Longwy, Minton, Zsolnay, Sevres, Cantagalli and Louis Tiffnay glass designs. Just like the ubiquitous blue colour glazes and Oriental decorative styles had been developed and traded at  several pottery centres along the Silk Road from Jingdezhen to Rishtan and Iknik, they were also widely developed in Europe.

Planet Neptune Azure blue

Planet Neptune Azure blue, Voyager photo

The azure blue colour was emulated in ceramics along the Silk route because the ancients in Egypt, Persia, China and other locations believed it was connected to Neptune and its associated qualities of compassion, good fortune and subtle mystical instincts. The Egyptians named Neptune Nu, which meant “primeval waters” and “ocean of aethers” and the oldest of the Egyptian Gods was also named Nu.

Produced 750-700 BC, Altes Museum

Egyptian blue was a pigment made up of a mixture of silica, lime, copper, and an alkali. Its colour was due to a calcium-copper tetrasilicate CaCuSi4O10 of the same composition as the naturally occurring mineral cuprorivaite. It was made in Egypt during the third millennium BC, and is the first synthetic pigment produced there, continuing in use until the end of the Greco-Roman period (332 BC–395 AD)

Revering the Earth

Most ancient cultures practised rituals that displayed a reverence for the earth. This usually took the form of celebrations that ritualistically encouraged healthy crops for the coming year and the earth being praised as a good source of sustenance. The Green Corn Ceremony (Busk) is an annual ceremony practised among various Native American peoples associated with the beginning of the yearly corn harvest. The ceremony was marked with dancing, feasting and fasting and religious observations. Likewise, the Pagans and Druids liked to worship mountains and sacred trees along with  various Earth Goddess figures.

In the East, the Earth Element was revered for its ability to balance all elements and heal, exemplified by the Chinese emperor exclusively wearing yellow, (symbolic of Earth). The Japanese favoured anagama ceramics for their tea ceremony, due to the fact they were fired in kilns built into the earth and experienced longer firings which strengthened the Earth element. They believed this extended exposure enhanced the quality of the Earth as this element was nourished by the Fire element

In Hebrew, the name Adam suggested the colour red, or “red earth” and is related to the Hebrew word “adama” 0r earth. It was believed that the first man came from earth, taken from the red soil. According to the Tanakh, Bible, Quran, the Hadith and other writings, Adam was formed from clay, and then life was breathed into him.

Shape and appearance also influence an earthly perception. Vessels of a symmetrical form with balance give the impression of being more grounded, as do earthy palettes and shapes that are bottom heavy with a low centre of gravity. Squat shaped pottery and objects tapering to a large base also convey an earthly appearance of being grounded. Solid, heavy pieces made from dense materials also have this effect, as do rougher textures (more yang). Yang chi moves in a downward direction towards the earth.. Horizontal lines also allude to being grounded and support earthiness.

The imagery presented here is a rumination of  the terrestrial diversity of earth and its related creative products.

Free as a bird

I once lived high on a hill with mountain views in the distance and I believe it was on a migratory bird path or near some energy vortex because flocks of birds flew past on a regular basis. They would fly in a huge circular arcs overhead and there would always be one bird that would release a shriek of delirious joy while in flight before they moved on. This liberating expression of delightful freedom in flight became an uplifting interlude during the day. The Taoists claim that the early morning collective bird symphonies of chirping and singing help to get the days chi moving in addition to the spiral vorticies created when they flap their wings.

“Byrdes of on kynde and color flok and flye allwayes together.” This old proverb has been in use since at least the mid 16th century. In 1545 William Turner used a version of it in his papist satire ‘The Rescuing of Romish Fox’. In nature, birds of a single species do in fact frequently form flocks. Ornithologists explain this behaviour as a ‘safety in numbers’ tactic to reduce the risk of predation. When a flock is feeding on the ground, a few sentinel birds keep watch from nearby trees, rising into the air and screeching loudly at the approach of any danger. Birds sing songs to defend territory and attract mates. Hence, it’s the males that sing the most—usually during breeding season.

Assembled below are some ceramic pieces with bird imagery, birds with their birdcalls, bird sculptures and bird humour from Michael Leunig.

“I don’t know anything about consciousness,” a Zen master once declared. “I just try to teach my students how to hear the birds sing.”   (A-wing and a-way)

I work with mid-range porcelain, which offers durability as well as a smooth surface for detailed decoration. Each one-of-a-kind piece is wheel-thrown and decorated entirely by hand, primarily through carving, as well as the application of slip and, occasionally, 20K gold luster. I explore textural patterns in my work through incised ornament, movement, fluid lines, and a peaceful palette of transparent glazes. I make intricately carved, functional pots to celebrate and bring elegance to everyday life. I am inspired by nature in all its aspects: the diversity of flora and fauna, habitats, seasons, and most importantly, the embodiment of life, growth, and vitality.

Porcelain vase – Alistair Whyte

Masterful porcelain art by Alistair Whyte

After Alister Whyte began studying ceramics at the University of Kyoto in 1978, the opportunity arose to work in the personal workshop of the master porcelain maker, Hirokuni Katsuno, whose major influence had been his teacher,  Hikaru Yamada, famous for being one of the founding fathers of the Sodeisha avant garde ceramics group in Kyoto.
For Alistair, this was the attainment of a previously unfulfilled ambition: to study with Katsuno, to further his own knowledge, for mastering the challenge of creating clean, purity of design pottery using fine white porcelains.
Having already completed a Diploma in Ceramic Design in Bendigo, Australia from 1973-75, he was confronted with several challenges such as adapting to the culture with limited Japanese language skills and learning different pottery techniques along with imbibing the subtle philosophies behind the Japanese pottery methods.

Three porcelain cups in blue and white by Alistair Whyte

Three porcelain cups in blue and white –  Alistair Whyte

Alistair’s interest in the Japanese pottery arts had initially been piqued in 1974, when he met the Japanese potter, Shunichci Inoue, in Australia. Also, from a young age, his interest in Oriental art was aroused by the fact that his grandparents had lived in China for several decades and had a collection of Eastern art
When in Japan, Alistair learnt that the Japanese notion of inner beauty is highlighted by the fact that, in contrast to the Western technique, Japanese potters throw to the inner surface of the pot, ensuring the inside shape is given more focus than the outside, during the process of forming a piece. Generally, more tools are used in making Japanese ceramics than in the West, and this is particularly the case in making porcelain, where, after throwing, the outside shape is turned to mirror the inside.

.Porcelain vase with floral motif

Porcelain vase with floral motif

In Kyoto, he also learnt the sophisticated Kikumomi technique of kneading the clay in a circular movement, resulting in a pattern reminiscent of a chrysanthemum flower. Alistair also adopted the intuitive Mizubiki throwing technique, where a large central piece has smaller pieces added from the top (throwing off the hump) and the potter follows his feel for the quantity required without any specific measurements.
Alistair Whyte’s pottery has evolved to become a hybrid mix between East and West and his repertoire also includes the use of raku, earthenware and stoneware. On returning to Australia, Alistair established a studio in the idyllic mountain location of Warburton, where he built a wood fired kiln, and he is still using imported porcelain clay from Japan, for its refined quality.

Pottery diversity in North Carolina

Large vase with carved ginkgo leaf-design – Michele Hastings and Jeff Brown

North Carolina is blessed with a rich pottery tradition stretching back over 100 years, with some potters being 6th generational. Producing pottery that was robust, utilitarian and wood fired with unique styles attracted buyers and collectors to this location in the past. The access to fine quality clays, the rural beauty and a vibrant community spirit attracted potters to the region. During the 70’s, there was a revival of the local traditional pottery and since then there has been continual growth up until now leading to the enterprise of over 100 active potters concentrated around the main centers of Seagrove and the Catawaba River Valley along with other galleries and family studios throughout NC.

The traditional quirky face jugs, snake decor wares and stoneware functional pottery have now expanded to a wider spectrum of the pottery arts representing numerous techniques including their alkaline ash glazing, wood firing, salt glazes mixed with decorative styles influenced by pottery cultures from around the globe.

The creative talent of NC  will be on display at their premier event in Fall at Seagrove, where over 50 local potters can be easily accessed at the Annual Celebration of Seagrove Potters Festival (11th)  running from November 16-18, 2018.

This is being held at the historic  Luck’s Cannery, 798 NC Hwy 705 in Seagrove

Go here for more details

Below are some of the potters who will be present at this event and others who also have galleries and studios in the area.

Ame Handpainted Porcelain Chawan Tea Bowl —  The Muddy Yogi Pottery

The Muddy Yogi, aka Kitty Maer, from Colombus, Ohio, is an active Yoga Practitioner, a ceramicist inspired by the Japanese pottery aesthetic/culture, a black cat lover and also a photographer. Her utilitarian pottery includes Nerikome teawares, oribi and celadon glazes and Sumi Ink designs. The stretching and balancing of her Yin/Zen yoga workshops has an alignment with the manipulation of pottery clay and her products exude a grounded symbiosis and calm that reflects this.

“I’m inspired by wabisabi rustic things that look like they’ve been unearthed. Which is funny since I gravitate toward stark white unmarred minimalist objects, but that’s not what feels right when I’m creating my pieces; they tend to be serene, quiet, and grounding and I love them for their flaws. Imperfection gives life and personality to handcrafted wares and I like to work with the materials I have at hand – the nature of the clay, a few simple favorite tools, and just see what direction the piece takes naturally.  I started with a desire to make chawan (Japanese tea bowls) and yunomi (cups) and I’d watched a documentary in which a tea master mentioned how each of the antique chawan tells a story and the more you look at one, the more you see. I spend hours with each bowl and I feel like a little bit of however I felt at the time is reflected in each one, telling its own little story that I hope someone enjoys reading one day.”

“When it comes to pottery   I can say I’ve never enjoyed doing anything so much in my life. I’m a yoga and meditation teacher and yet, the process of pottery has proven to be my favorite form of therapy and the best teacher in regard to unattachment, patience, and letting go.”

Maastricht is a picturesque medieval city located in the southern Dutch province of Limburg. In 1988, TEFAF (The European Fine Art Fair) was launched here at the new MECC venue. TEFAF has since evolved to be  regarded as one of the the world’s pre-eminent organizations for viewing fine art, antiques, and design.
TEFAF runs three international Fairs annually – TEFAF Maastricht, NL, which covers 7,000 years of art history; TEFAF New York Spring, focused on modern and contemporary art & design; and TEFAF New York Fall, covering fine and decorative art from antiquity to 1920.
TEFAF gives international dealers the platform to present museum-quality works of all eras and genres to a broad base of collectors, curators and connoisseurs, championing the finest art from across the ages. Presented here is a broad selection of the art that will be displayed at the next New York Fall TEFAF showcase coming up on the 27th October – 31st October, 2018.  Also displayed is some of the art from the previous Tefaf exhibitions

Triple Gourd Vase—Kangxi Period,-1662-1722—Vanderverven Oriental Art, TEFAF

The large size of this vase reflects the remarkable technical achievement of the Jingdezhen potters in the early 18th century. It would have been made in parts and then ‘looted’ together before entering the kiln. The failure rate when firing such monumental pieces was very high, making them a rarity and expensive to produce. Such large scale porcelain was no doubt intended for one of the European courts.

Lava glazes that amaze

The Lava glaze ceramics of the 60’s were an extension of the Bauhaus design concept of creating affordable decorative arts for mass consumption during the middle of the 20th century. The manufacturing process was simplified with the use of pottery casting molds and the application of a diverse variety of glazes by the enamelers and glaze technicians. This was combined with applying integrated craft procedures to produce large numbers that maintained an aesthetic appeal of high quality. The first “lava”glaze appeared in 1967, coinciding with the sixties “summer of love”, so the bold colors, textures and vivid abstract styles were really in harmony with the spirit of the era.
The repetitive pottery forms of the mold created industrial vessels were given more distinctive features by the enamelers, who were encouraged to be adventurous and experimental with their decorations, particularity after the introduction of the foamy, dripping, rich textural Fat Lava glazes in the early 70’s and was instrumental in helping to redefine the vase in a modern, sculptural context. The Fat Lava glazes at this time, in French Vallauris, became a sublime match with the studio hand built, ‘free form’ modernist ceramics.

This remarkable era of design freedom unleashed structural geometric reliefs, contrasted with smooth glazes in black, blue and red, providing a vibrant decorative language for  the abstracted modernist forms. An exotic plethora of other imaginative combinations of textures and colour were also abundantly evident. The use of lava glazes heralded the emergence of a more eccentric aesthetic along with other forays into  reactive, evocative ceramic designs. The rugged surface craters that appeared in the glazes were symbiotic with the lunarscapes of the sixties space exploration and lava clad Sputnik shapes were even created by the German designers. This flamboyant Mid Century phase of ceramic art spurned a wave of affordable modern decor designs which also included inspiring contributions from Italy, USA, Spain, UK and Scandinavia.

Compelling clay shapes collection

Hee Kyoung--painted porcelain -- France

Hee Kyoung — painted porcelain — France

An eclectic selection of ceramic vessels of various style and age, with an emphasis on form and decorative designs, that serve to enhance the objects shape. Whether a ceramic piece is handbuilt, thrown on a wheel or made from a mold cast construction, the adaptability and versatility of clay allows for a multitude of permutations in the design. The texture and chosen decoration can be the key factor for the choice of form or conversely, the decoration is adapted to the created form.
The curve of a singular contour line can be enough to hold appeal for a particular form without any further decoration required. If anything, a succinct focus on a form contributes to the appeal of the shape. Complex and busy details can also fit more appropriately on very basic forms like a cylinder or sphere and certain styles can even add shape to the form. Alternating shades within the decorative panels adds depth and highlights aspects and angles within the form.
Changing designs and colors on the perpetual curvature of a form leads to the notion of infinity, expansion and a sense of anticipation along with the dynamic between concealment and overt display. The dichotomy of combining the lines of a straight sided vessel against relaxing sinuous curves also presents a powerful dynamic. Vertical lines make a shape appear to be taller and more slender, horizontal lines make an object appear to be more grounded. Curvy lines are more inviting , while rigid, angular ones make a shapes seem more aloof. ( see Riedizioni I – Aldo Londi) This article displays examples of these design considerations.
Over many millennium, numerous clay form designs have come into fruition and fortunately, a healthy proportion of them have survived, to be admired, marveled and act as a source of inspiration from the past.

Loïc Thérien

“If I take a look behind my almost 40 years as a potter, a clear trend is emerging: that of letting the earth and the heat speak and favoring their natural expression, first by working the forms to purify and adapt them to the type of glaze to come, then giving the maximum space for cooking and the chance that it generates. Thus, after having explored salt glazes, I am now happy or sorry for the random and capricious formation of crystals.”

“Sometimes I interpret, sometimes I compose and always I learn, I learn. I work sandstone and porcelain. I mainly make utility pottery in connection with the preparation, cooking and serving of food. I take special care to produce quality objects that can be appreciated in their daily use.”

“My enamels are made of clay picked respectfully at the belly of our mother earth. I decline it pure in a deep brown, lengthened with salts to find a rustic flavor or mixed with wood ashes for the depth of the sunny ocher. High temperature fire reveals all of its immense alchemical power.”

“Clay plasticity is a great playground that fuels my creative breath. I want to give life to this material that thinks itself in three dimensions, embodying it in objects of sharing and everyday poetry. I am both an artist who explores the sensitivity of the earth and a craftswoman who works to produce objects of comfort and refinement. My production is made of porcelain. I favor this clay for its qualities of brightness and finesse of work. The harmony of shapes, light and textures is at the heart of my work.”

“Inspired by the industrial revolution of the nineteenth century I draw each of my pieces with pear and brush. I cook my high-temperature gas oven parts to give an old newspaper effect to my drawings. This high cooking temperature allows my parts to achieve total vitrification and keep the bare earth on a larger surface. I use in some cases the electric oven and so, my drawings appear with greater contrast in a pure black and white. In this case, I use a transparent glaze.”

Sandstone or porcelain. Shot, fashioned, carved. Single pieces or small series. Reduced cooking … sometimes with wood but most of the time with gas. I treat each piece as a composition in its own right, necessarily derived from the earth and which also keeps track of it. Nature inspires me; plant, animal, human. I like to play, to experiment, to discover, to understand, to share. I am listening to what processes and materials have to say.

“My meticulous main collection is inspired by several traditional Ukrainian symbols that are part of my origins. These sets, although mainly used in Ukrainian traditional embroidery and costumes, all have a very special meaning. So I take these scenery to transcribe them in my work. I find a tradition that bubbles in my veins, in my mind and nourishes my imagination. My approach is a long fantastic journey between my roots and origins as well as my personal universe where I feel and exploit different ideas, paths and convictions.”

“It is too easy to fall into a serious daily life, where the duties of life make us forget the imagination and the infinite universe of cerebral vagrancy. So I come to create a world more childish, traditional, calm and positive, to give full place to the daydream in each of us.”

“My creations are inspired mainly by my urban environment but also by nature. I shape and turn utilitarian objects with two clays: porcelain and semi-gray sandstone that I color with engobe. So much diversity to create contrasts between plant colors and concrete gray. In their everyday use, I hope my ceramics will tinge your lives with simple pleasures while allowing you to enjoy the moment.”

‘Shadows in Smoke’ exhibition –

Plinth Gallery, Colorado  —  3rd August to 29th September

The richly-colored clays that ceramicist Shamai Sam Gibsh uses are usually collected from across Israel and around the world. For his earthy tones, no colors are added to the clay — these are their natural colors. Textures and patterns are often made with pine needles and other elements from Israel’s landscape. He is inspired by the diversity of geographies in Israel ranging from the deserts in the South to the snow-capped mountains in the North.
Gibsh sometimes creates with a contemporary studio pottery technique called terra sigillata, which was developed from a tradition of ancient potters in Greece prior to the use of glaze. Roughly translated as ‘sealed earth,’ the popular meaning is ‘clay bearing little images.’ The variety of clays and the firing process result in the appearance of extraordinary landscapes infused with smoky effects. Gibsh is a renowned Israeli ceramicist whose work is exhibited and sold internationally, including in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. He creates his pieces from his studio in Jaffa, Israel.
