The flair of Royal Haeger

In 1871, the same year of the great Chicago fire, a young German immigrant named David H. Haeger founded the company originally known as the Dundee Brickyard. Over the next 130 years under four generations of family leadership, this small town brickmaker was to become America’s oldest and largest production pottery. The firm began producing artware in 1914, and the contributions of former Fulper employee Martin Stangl to its success is probably incalculable.

In 1938  design genius Royal Hickman joined the company to introduce an extraordinary line of artware, called Royal Haeger.  Hickman’s work was daringly intricate with smooth, flowing lines and highly original glazes.

Some of his designs reflected an Art Deco influence.  Public demand for Royal Haeger artware was immediate and strong. Royal Hickman’s world-acclaimed designs included his famous black panther, a sleek elongated cat, first produced in 1941 and offered in three sizes.

Another distinguished chief designer was Eric Olsen, whose career with Haeger spanned 25 years (1947-1972). Olsen’s many contributions to the Royal Haeger line included his magnificent bull figure, produced in 1955. Haeger became recognized for its striking designs ranging from the dramatic to the whimsical. As America’s oldest and largest producer of pottery, Haeger have produced a diversity of products including  dinnerware, but have become especially known for vases, figurines, miniature animals, birds, flowers and lamps – as well as other unusual and useful accessories of exquisite taste and have continually attracted the attention of collectors worldwide.eric Olsen red bull figurine

Haeger claims that their famous glazes are  frequently imitated but never successfully copied. The glaze covering the artware must be perfectly mixed and blended; hard and durable when fired, without cracks. Above all, the color must be clear and lustrous. Careful dipping assures a uniform coating of the bisque. In 2011 haeger celebrated their 140th anniversary and vowed to continue their  dedication to innovative design and quality craftsmanship.

I see you’ve used many of my pics, some you’ve given me credit for. Would have been nice if all my pics were labeled Haegernerd at flickr but thanks for giving some credit. I’m a Haeger lover and like your website!

I own the Royal Hickman lady riding the fish (your first photo). Yours is the only picture of this piece that I’ve found so far. Do you know the year, value, etc? Mine also has a large shallow bowl that the figure rests in.

I have a piece that belonged to my mother, it says on the bottom
    ROYAL HAEGER
    R 476
    US
By (not sure about that second letter) ROYAL (and maybe a signature can’t quite make it it out… Could be) Mc (something)
It’s blue with a purple fleck that is more concentrated on the top. Its low and oblong and was used by my mother at a flower show where she won first place with the arrangement. In the early ’40’s

I have a Royal Haeger Canada bud vase, 61618. This piece has an awesome orange and green, with a splash or red and white glaze patterning. At the base, it resembles a geode. Does anyone know what the glaze name is? I’d also like to know something of the RH Canadian history.

Would be happy o post a picture but haven’t seen a way to do so.

I would like to know the value of a Royal Haeger table lamp.
It is rather oriental looking, shades of green mixed with blue.
The raised design is seaweed on each side and a fan tailed fish at the top. The shape is a square opening with a small dish in the center of the base.

I am in desperate need to find a royal haeger turtle planter. I believe its R540usa. It’s both green and brown. It has incredible sentimental value to my wife and like an oaf, I hit the shelf and it went flying. Please feel free to call or text me 252-916-4774 or email and put this in the subject line. I’m willing to pay a finders fee if need be and the total is not absurd.

Please help me get out of the doghouse…I’m begging you…

I have a Royal Haeger by Royal Hickman Console bowl mauve colored w/mauve and blue flowers around the top w/a matching mauve and blue lady on a fish that sits in the middle. What can you tell me about it? It has been passed down to me from my mother from her mother. The family story was that my uncle sent it to my grandmother from Japan. I’m guessing that is not true since it was made in the U.S.A. Thank you.

Hello, and thank you for creating such an awesome page of Royal Haeger images and info! I recently tumbled across this large jug marked “Royal Haeger 432-H USA” There’s also the little copy write insignia in the middle of the mark. The piece is 13.5 inches tall and 7.5 inches wide at the widest point, which is sort of oblong. The glaze is gorgeous! A flowing variance of blues with drizzles of matte black. I have found one jug in the shape and size, but it was a metallic solid glaze – nothing like this. Is there anyone who might be able to help me date and value this little gem? Thanks in advance for any assistance any of you can provide! You can see it here: http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e239/LisaPrice/eBay/IMG_5732_zps4qxe9ms2.jpg

I’m not sure this site is active. If so, I have a signed Haegar S Maglio lamp. It is in the shape of a vase covered in shells that is on its side. It sits on a small pedestal and is white/off white. Inside the side of the vase are six detailed small fish, all highly colorful.
I bought a 1980s home with many other Haegar pieces, all from the 80s. These are larger and more well known. But I cannot find another lamp similar to mine. Any ideas?
