Raiding the cookie jar

McCoy, American Bisque, Brush, Abingdon, Regal China, Roseville and Shawnee — all the grand old pottery companies in the USA, made cookie jars of some type or another and they are all highly collectible brands. Likewise in Europe, some of the famous brands like Royal Dalton, Moorcroft, Wedgewood, Royal Staffordshire and Clarice Cliff all produced cookie jars or biscuit jars, as they preferred to call them.  Cookie/biscuit barrels or jars, have been used in England since the latter part of the 18th century. This coincided with the rise in popularity of the ritual of afternoon tea drinking. In the USA, cookie jars started to appear around 1929 and went into wider production during the ’30s, the  Brush Pottery Company in Zanesville being recognized as the first. The golden age  for American cookie jar production covers the years from 1940 until 1970, with several manufacturers rising to prominence.

Monroe cookie jar porcelain

Marilyn Monroe ” Teal Dress ” Limited Edition cookie jar ( from Happy Memories ) 1995

In 1988, Sotheby`s auctioned off Andy Warhol’s belongings, including 175 cookie jars. The New York auction house estimated they would fetch $7,000. After the spirited bidding had reached its final conclusion, the collection had gone for $247,830. Most of the  of the interest was generated by the Warhol name but it also put cookie jars into a different dimension of respectability in the collecting sphere. A discernible lift in the interest in cookie jar collecting followed. Over the decades Cookie Jars have represented various pop culture trends and have quite often featured outlandish designs.

Even newer cookie jars are in demand. Collectors are purchasing  jars made in the `70s, `80s and ’90s  if they are Limited Editions or in mint condition.

VeniceClayArtists 10th anniversary

“There is nothing abnormal about a chess player being abnormal. This is normal.” – Vladimir Nabokov

“The biggest problem I see among people who want to excel in chess – and in business and in life in general – is not trusting their instincts enough. This is the essential element that cannot be measured by any analysis or device, and I believe it’s at the heart of success in all things: the power of intuition and the ability to harness and use it like a master.”  Garry Kasparov

The genesis for the artistic collective of the Venice Clay Artists came about in 2007 during a summer session of a Venice Adult Ceramic Class in California. As Venice artist Joyce Lieberman relates — “Elaine Roarke, the class teacher, proposed we do 10 minute modelling sessions to create figurative works. Dana Eli presented me with a quick sketch in clay from my pose, which I refined and glazed in two shades of black glaze. She became known as the dark queen and when someone mentioned that ‘Raku Bob’ was at a chess night, the inspiration came to create an oversize chess set. Different clay artists that were present signed up to create individual pieces and it eventually came into fruition and was used for public chess demonstrations.” One of the original objectives of the website VeniceClayArtists was to monitor the progress of the chess set.
In 2010 I took on the mantle of resurrecting the expired website, acquiring it online purely for the name, thinking it was connected to Venice in Italy. Having lived in Santa Monica within walking distance of Venice Beach, I was equally pleased to discover the connection. So this is my 7th anniversary and nearly 1 billion hits later I am still entranced by the breadth and depth of the vast realm of art that is now accessible online and love the challenge of discovery, research and presentation.

Here is a random collection of eclectic images related to previous posts on VeniceClayArtists with links to them. This will be done over three installments.

Indigenous ethnic potteries – Maghreb and Central America

A diverse collection of tribal ethnic pottery art from Central America (Costa Rica, Panamá, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua) and the North African Maghreb (Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia).

Central America

Costa Rica

The remnant indigenous Chorotega potters of the Guanacaste/Nicoya region of northwest Costa Rica, since the pre-European contact era until present, continue creating their distinctive oven baked and painted (with natural slips) art pottery. Some of these Indian pottery pieces are re-creations of their ancestors’ archeological objects, while other objects are more contemporary, but always informed by their pre-Columbian aesthetic.

Honduras

Historically, the country’s most important handicrafts have been in the production of pottery and objects made of twisted, knotted, spun and woven plant fibers, especially ropes, baskets, textiles, and mats. The Mesoamerican peoples that lived in the Honduran territory at the time of the Spanish conquest, the Chortis, Chorotegas and Lencas, developed a highly sophisticated level of pottery, ranging from the simplest products for daily use to the most intricate ceremonial objects. The Lenca pottery arts is a testimony to the pottery tradition of Honduras and its activity is reserved for women in the community, popularly called loceras. The process of creation and painting is done by hand using old techniques where no artificial ingredients are used, the colors used favor organic pigments which are obtained through natural procedures. After a piece is molded, it is left for a few days in the sun and once dry, it is placed in an outdoor adobe oven.

In North Africa, wheel-thrown pottery made by men dates from the 7th century B.C. when the Phoenicians introduced the potter’s wheel to the Algerian coast. Handbuilt pottery made by women, including those from the Kabyle, an older, probably indigenous tradition, dates back 2000 years before the birth of Christ. Pottery and ceramics are handmade in simple kilns, and then painted using natural-made paints and dyes, applied manually by the fingers of the women who make them. This advanced and meticulous way of “finger-painting” pottery is a prized example of Algerian art made by indigenous artisans and fine craftsmen.

Morocco

Women’s pottery from the Rif, a mountainous area of Morocco,  whose roots go back to the Neolithic, is considered part of the World Cultural Heritage, due to its great anthropological artistic value. In the Taounate province, due to the risk of this tradition disappearing, the organisation Innovarte initiated a project aimed at preserving the trading and revival of all the repertoires of their crafts. It also included improving the women’s working conditions and enhancement of production techniques. Also the design of new collections are encouraged along with support for commercialization.

Shawnee collectibles

3399843968_f13c48c984Tips for collecting Shawnee wares : Shawnee Pottery, a company in Zanesville, Ohio, started producng wares in 1937. They created kitchenware such as teapots, cookie jars, salt n pepper shakers, baking dishes and a wide range of decorative art pieces. Some of their rare cookie jars can fetch up to $1000. Terrace Ceramics bought the company in 1961 when they went out of business. As they used the same moulds , the products looked the same but had the Terrace Ceramics markings. The quality was different and they aren’t as valuable for collecting.

In the 1990’s another Shawnee company emerged known as The New Shawnee Pottery Company , and they created a new line of cookie jars. From a collecting perspective don’t confuse these with the original  Shawnee’s.

Everything from Shawnee  is collectible, especially their cookie jars. The Smiley Pig, Muggsy Dog, Dutch Jack n Jill, Extremely Lucky Elephant and Sailor Boy are all desirable items.

The first Shawnee corn line was know as White Corn , cleverly designed dinnerware pieces based on corn shapes. This series is the most favoured by collecters, the later yellow corn lines are not as popular.

There are numerous look- alike Shawnee wares on the market, and are collectible but the genuine Shawnee is usually of  superior quality and will appreciate in value  much faster.
