Female Art Figures

477px-777px-FemaleArtFigurines

Above sculpture by Rieke van der Stoep –  ” Crosswind “

I noticed while sourcing images for my post ” Figurines Of Intrigue ” that the figurines of the female form were in predominance, so I decided to dedicate a post purely on this theme. Most of the female ceramic figurines seem to be created by women whereas the sculptural female art forms have a more equal representation between male and female artists. On display are female art figures that capture a timeless elegance and compelling level of feminine mystique.

I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set her free.—Michelangelo

kurtis bell bronze sculpture

Kurtis Bell  –  Abigail, Abby’s Angel ‘

Kurtis Bell never intended to be a sculptor. He was painting and wanted to come up with some way to have a model pose for him without the cost of a model, which he could not afford. His idea was to quickly sculpt the image he wanted to paint so he would have the subject and pose he wanted for a reference. Then he could reclaim the clay and start over.
He found he was better at sculpting than painting and now mainly does  sculpting.

This bronze sculpture of an angel bathing by a stream was created for his recently departed dog Abby.

Ghost Gum Gone and Vintage Australian Ceramics

Lost ghost gum tree

Ghost gum magnificence

When I would take my dog for a stroll, the first thing that would confront me when ascending the steep hill near my home, was this magnificent old Ghost Gum tree. Situated in a commanding position like a guardian overlooking the valley below, it was a vision of grace, endurance and power. Some have a lifespan of over 500 years, so I was dismayed to see it being removed with chainsaws recently.  A vision not to behold ! Apparently a branch was diseased but overall the tree looked healthy to me.

These iconic Australian trees  don’t occur naturally in prolific  numbers and have the status of being sacred according to the indigenous Australians. Its long and smooth branches have a serpent like quality. This Ghost Gum was over 50 feet in height. The only place it will exist now is in Google maps which is where I grabbed this image from.

This majestic Ghost Gum is also in the neighbourhood and has the twisting, weaving, undulating branches that are similar to one of  its sacred cousins, the Oak Tree. This one is on private property, so it hopefully won’t fall to a similar fate.

Gum leaves, gum nuts and gum flowers were a regular feature on Australian vintage pottery. So its not hard to find pottery with representation of the Gumtree.

Functional Ceramic Wares

The trusty pot has done a sterling job at serving humanity for a long time. An enduring symbol of sustenance and one of the earliest forms of art in the home, especially in the poorer households. Whether it was just a simple functional form or had decorative designs and colourful glazes, it reflected artistry. Both the Chinese and the Japanese believed the digestive system was ruled by the Earth element, so it was a natural symbiosis to use ceramic wares for serving and consuming foods and beverages. Also for cooking it was the most favoured. They still believe that for preparing medicinal herbs, a plain unglazed pot is the most ideal.

This post features a collection of functional pieces, centred around  domestic food preparation, storage  and presentation.
